So i broke my left wrist on my motorcycle in the middle of Nov. Had to have a couple of surgeries and now Im an a cast. A small cast.. I have full motion with all my fingers and my thumb. Company restricted me to right seat only. Which Im fine with.. I can't turn the stupid tiller over on the left side.. Anyhow now the insurance company wants me to get cleared by an AME before I fly again. My medical is still current, and there is nothing in the FARs about flying with a cast. I can perform all my co-pilot duties with ease. But just to be on the safe side company makes me see an AME. BAD MOVE!!!!! Now I got to probably go to Flight Safety or use our airplane for a medical flight ability test and prove that I am capable. Ever had anything like this happen to you?

My AME looked at me said I had full range of motion with my fingers and thumb and pronounced me good to go.

I was flying 172s at the time though.

My AME stated this morning that a broken finger or other bone doesn't ground you. The regs leave it to a decision between you and your treating doctor.

However, having any sort of a brace, cast, or splint means that based on guidance from OKC, he can't issue a new 2nd or 1st class medical without restrictions as the device limits range of motion on a joint.

Basically at this point, the two choices are wait 'til it heals or start the SODA process.

I'm contacting our regional flight surgeon tomorrow to see if there are any other possible routes, then our local FSDO to find out how long it takes for the SODA process: http://www.faa.gov/licenses_certificates/medical_certification/rfs/ for your regional flight surgeon contact info.

Good luck!

If my arm was about to fall off I wouldn't tell my AME!!! Get OK City involved and "stand by to not fly" make sure your company will support you while your grounded! Hate to be that way but I didn't get any vasaline last time I tried to do it the "Right" way and wound up not getting my medical renewed for 4 months! Thanks god I had a good owner at the time and they covered me through the whole thing.
Just my 2 cents..

No worries... Going to today to Flight Safety DFW and to a ride with the DFW FSDO manager. This whole process took one week.. Pretty painless so far. I blocked a 1 hour sim session. I asked if that would be long enough and he told me it would probably take 10 to 15 min. No problem.
