I have started taking lessons after putting it off for years because of family, money etc. My question is I am 39 and was wondering is it too late to start a career in aviation? I know the major airlines are out of the question but was thinking of instucting or maybe working for some of the smaller companies. Thanks for any help or suggestions.

yes

Go for it man. If this is what you have wanted to to do I say go for it. It's a industry that is rather bitter sweet. I am back instructing and not making bad money doing it. I was flying 121, I still love to fly and this will suit for now even though I have my eyes set on bigger and better down the road. Happy Flying!!!

I'm 37, I started 2 years ago with my PPL, I now have my CFI, 700 hours, and a part time gig delivering airplanes.

My recommendation if you want to do this, bust your arse, build as much time as you can as fast as you can, with the best quality time as you can.

Get your CFI, CFII and MEI and teach, this will allow you to build hours as well as allowing you to network, which is probably the most important part of finding a job.

If you get on top of this now, and within the next 2 to 4 years, IF the industry turns around, you should be able to find yourself a position.

At worse, you'll have a lot of fun building the time and a cool hobby.

Make sure that you have a source of income to fall back on should the aviation industry not turn around and you are unable to find a job.

heck

I got started when i was 45 years old, flew 6 days a week balked up a good amount of time.

Doon't car to much for teaching, so i went back into sales again, i can fly when ever i want. In sales bill my clients what i feel, and then funnel the profits back into flying , to bild more time:cool:

If you can take the time and commit to training (and afford the co$t) then do it, absolutely. You may only make it to being a CFI, but that isn't a bad gig. Cargo might work for you too, but it might not be easy being gone nights with a family and all. Regionals aren't out of the question, there was a guy in my class who was 50. Tell them that you're interested in the training department after you hit 60, which is a dang good place to be, BTW. So hey, bottom line is that if you wanna do it, do it. Be aggressive however, don't string it out.

Good luck!
