Does an ATP written exam have an expiration on it before the flight? I know the FE test is good for two years and was debating on a 737 type with the ATP written exam (already took it) or a flight in a multi engine turbine. Funds are low, so I have to save the cash B4 a 737 type and didn't want the written to expire.

24 months for the knowledge exam, unless you're currently flying for a certificate holder.

Why bother buying a type? Get experience, and then apply to an operator that will type you.

Practical test aircraft

If you have your sights set on Southwest and have the money, getting your ATP and B737 type might be an idea. I believe the minimum total time for SW is 2500, which means you still have to build some time before it will consider you.

On the other hand, why spend the money on any kind of turbine? All you need for your ATP practical is an appropriately-designated examiner and a light twin.

There are plenty of commercial outfits that train for the ATP ride. But, really, the least expensive way is to brush up on your instrument skills, find an examiner and light twin, and take the practical.

Hope that helps. Good luck with your ATP.

My debate was between getting the practical in a light twin (sorry bobby, thats what I meant, not turbine,) or taking that written to one of the 737 type rating joints out there (higher power, ect) and getting the ATP in the stimulator.
Avbug, as far as buying the type, my current employer (uncle sam) will pay for 60 percent since I have the GI bill. The difference in price between the two (out of my pocket) is not too huge with the GI bill. 1700ish bucks for the light twin atp or 3500ish bucks for the 737 type (this is all considering 60 percent GI bill funding, cash out of my pocket) I know they say there may be two different piles of apps at SW (one with types, one without) and I didn't want my written to expire before I took the practical. 24 months huh? Better start saving.
Bobby: I think I fall into the 1500 total hours Turbine time since my hours are all in Hornets, not the 2500 total hours. At least that what it says on the website. Correct me if I'm wrong. The 1000 hours PIC turbine hours are covered since all the time in the Hornet is PIC (single seat) I know those are the mins, but I should have around 2000 total hours (1700 turbine PIC) by the time my obligation is complete.
One more thing, if I get the ATP finished sooner rather than later (in a light twin or in the 737 stimulator), does this rating expire? Thanks for the help guys, this is a great site for info.
