As a cfi, are there any special requirements to train an ATP canidate? As far as the cfi having a minimum amount of hours?

ATP CFI requirements

No. ATP trainees do not need a CFI signoff for the practical, so instructor quals to train them are immaterial. 14 CFR 61.153 sets forth the eligibility requirements for the ATP:

To be eligible for an airline transport pilot certificate, a person must:

(a) Be at least 23 years of age;

(b) Be able to read, speak, write, and understand the English language. If the applicant is unable to meet one of these requirements due to medical reasons, then the Administrator may place such operating limitations on that applicant's pilot certificate as are necessary for the safe operation of the aircraft;

(c) Be of good moral character;

(d) Meet at least one of the following requirements:

(1) Hold at least a commercial pilot certificate and an instrument rating;

(2) Meet the military experience requirements under §61.73 of this part to qualify for a commercial pilot certificate, and an instrument rating if the person is a rated military pilot or former rated military pilot of an Armed Force of the United States; or

(3) Hold either a foreign airline transport pilot or foreign commercial pilot license and an instrument rating, without limitations, issued by a contracting State to the Convention on International Civil Aviation.

(e) Meet the aeronautical experience requirements of this subpart that apply to the aircraft category and class rating sought before applying for the practical test;

(f) Pass a knowledge test on the aeronautical knowledge areas of §61.155(c) of this part that apply to the aircraft category and class rating sought;

(g) Pass the practical test on the areas of operation listed in §61.157(e) of this part that apply to the aircraft category and class rating sought; and

(h) Comply with the sections of this part that apply to the aircraft category and class rating sought.

14 CFR 61.153 is silent regarding instructor endorsement requirements. ATP signoff requirements, or lack thereof, are addressed further in AC 61-65D:

b. An instructor recommendation is not required, unless the applicant has failed the practical test and this is a retest (per § 61.49). Applicants for retest must comply with the appropriate retest requirements of § 61.49. In addition, § 61.49 requires that the instructor sign the applicant’s FAA Form 8710-1 for the retest.

(emphasis added)

There is nothing set forth in 14 CFR 61.153 or AC 61-65D where instructor signoffs are required for the ATP practical. In other words, after the FAA reviews your logbook and hands you its little slip to the take the ATP written, you take the written and just show up to take the practical. No flight, sim or ground instruction is required, so, by inference, instructor quals for training ATP students are immaterial. If someone going for the ATP wants instruction beforehand, he/she can use the instructor of his/her choice. You do need a signoff if you bust the practical.

Hope this lengthy explanation helps.

I didn't have to let the FAA look at my log before taking the written. Whatcha talkin' 'bout, Willis?

Unless something has changed, at one time you had to go to FSDO, have it audit your logbook, and have it issue a little white slip that attested that your times met ATP requirements before you could take the written.

Not no more... I just went down to my local testing facility, passed the test, took the ride, bada-bing bada-boom, I'm an ATP

took the ride in the lear 31 sim at flight safety during my type ride. I knew that if I just got the written out of the way before my class date, that the type ride was virtually the same as an ATP ride, and I'd kill two birds with one stone.
