For ATC Types:
Last night I got stuck just north of a squall line with airliners either side while flying a STAR. My radar was highly questionable. If I opted to divert off a STAR, is a low altitude course reversal possible or would ATC procedures require a vector off the route for separation reasons before turning? We were very close to the line. Any opinions? Thanks.

I'm not an ATC type, but I would have requested a heading to avoid the Tstorms long before I got close enough to worry about them. Easy enough.

It's no big deal as long as you are not lost comm. Call the controller and tell him you need to divert to XYZ because your radar is down. Ask for a good initial vector. (and remind them about your radar so they don't vector you into a storm).
Spinning off of an arrival at a busy airport without telling someone could get you dead or violated.

I always have a plan of attack and a plan of escape for T-boomers, but the issue of sequencing and separation never came up before. Heckuva light show!
