Controllers at Capitol City in Harrisburg Pa are doing that stupid hold short trick again.......
A CLEARANCE TO TAXI TO A RUNWAY IS NOT A CLEARANCE TO CROSS THAT PARTICULAR RUNWAY!
If your on the southside the only way to taxi to the runways (usually west/northwest operation) is to cross the runways in use.
NORMAL controllers usually tell you to "taxi to runway 32..... hold short of runway 32 on charlie to make it easy for everybody.
ABNORMAL controllers (that need to get a life) will simply tell you to taxi to the runway with no specific instructions. When you do cross they triumphantly announce that you have crossed an active runway. As to what this is suppose to do for safety.... I'm not really sure.
Lynchburg Va had a similar problem. They had a female controller for years that particularly enjoyed this ploy. Also watch out for Burbank Ca. I'm sure there are many others but this problem rarely comes up because of the professionalism of 99% of the other controllers you talk to.
Don't let one of these idiots wreck your day.
Danger signs to watch out for are right on the airport diagram. A ramp area that only has one taxiway coming out of it that is perpendicular to the runway is a dead giveaway.
If you are unsure, simply hold short of any runway intersection you come upon and query atc if it's okay to cross. If the controller gets that exasperated note in their voice just because you called to check... they need to get another job!
