An astar 727 had a right main gear collapse during landing in ATL this morning. I don't know the exact weather at the time but it was pretty soupy out there. From what I understand everyone was ok.

Gear Collapse

Yep. We had one at JFK a few years ago. Always the right main. Some of us suspect it is the side loads from the way they launch the containers into the aircraft. Sometimes they get stuck (because they bend when loaded) and there is a lot of rocking back and forth to get the locks over them. Found some cracks in some others over the years.

That particular aircraft had only been converted 4-5 years ago. Old Continental/Air Micronesia aircraft? Can't remember. No books with me today.

Don't know what else it could be. I hit just as hard on the left side as the right one.

I hadn't heard of that one. No extenuating factors in either case? Just collapsed without warning?

Makes me glad that Douglas built them like a freight train! :)
