Sorry about this repost if you read it on baseops.net:

Just got an email which read the following: "Beginning in FY 2004, the Air National Guard plans to require all newly commissioned RATED officers attend the Air and Space Basic Course to enhance their professional development."

I am scheduled for AMS 13 OCT, is it possible to get out of ASBC or is it now a permanent deal? Not that I necessarily wanna get out I just wanna know what it entails.

Thanks!

I'm waiting for AMS dates for this FY2004 year so I guess I'll get to go to this too. What do you know about it? Is it after UPT or before? What KC135 unit did you get with?

why?

Why is everyone so anti-ASBC?

From what I've heard from people attending it, it was a lot of fun, personally if I have an option to go versus being on casual (coffee making) status for 6 months prior to nav training, I think I am going to go.

Im pro-ASBC;-) I got my AMS date in 04 by chance, but i do know they just havent been issued yet. They will be soon

ASBC comes between ots and UPT.

I am with the 128th ARW in Milwaukee

Congrats, I got on with 121st ARW in Columbus,OH. I guess it's at Maxwell AFB? How long is the school? I'm guessing it'll be like...a welcome to the AF...type thing?

Congrats on teh 121st. Are you '04 as well?

Ya here is the deal on it: Basically it teaches you where you fit in the Air Force, kind of how the whole structure works, etc. I hear it si basically what you make of it.

Ya it is 6 weeks long, and it is not mandatory yet for air guard guys, but if you have time between AMS and UPT they will try to send you. Hey its 6 weeks of active time at least

ive heard

Well I heard the highlight is where the class goes into the field and runs a simulated air operations center. I guess there is a lot of intro to airpower theory and how all the systems work together in war and peacetime.

It's kind of nice because I can at least say that the AFROTC classes I've had (going to be a senior) don't delve much into the actual application of airpower. We get a lot of experience giving briefings and writing assignments along with general leadership theory and some very general airpower theory but nothing at the application level.

I am excited to attend. I hope to attend as many PME courses as I can attend.

Here's a question for you all, I have heard that completing SOS via correspondence increases your chances for attending SOS in residence. Any truth to that?

Just because I have an opportunity to do SOS via correspondence right now

ASBC

Whether or not you go to ASBC depends on many things, the most basic is your training pipeline schedule and your commander.

I'm at Columbus right now and I have been told that I will not likely go to ASBC. The reason being is that for people coming out of pilot training, ASBC put is a 6 week gap between training. Since gaps in training has been a problem in the past in the rated pipeline, AETC is not going to send you if it makes your training pipeline longer.

Your commander has to sign you off to go. If he doesn't think that you would benefit to go, then he won't send you. Simple as that...at least that's how it is right now.

Personally, after going to the Academy for 4 years and taking about 25 semester hours of Air Power theory and professional development classes, I think ASBC is complete joke. I've had classmates who have already been and they say it's a joke. Plus, there is absolutely no way that they are going to put 4000 or so new LTs through Maxwell each year. My 2 cents.
