what are the current upgrade times at asa?

is dfw the junior base? how bout the reserve time at the junior base?

thanks

There has not been much growth at ASA yet. The last round of upgrades went over 10 years in ATL (#94) and almost 6 years on the prelims for DFW.

With the continued reduction of ATL RJ flying, many of the relatively senior RJ pilots have said they will bid over to the ATR when they get the chance because it is taking about 6 to 7 years seniority to hold a CRJ200 line.

But, these numbers change quite a bit from one month to another. Probably the best way to figure out your future if you came to ASA is to figure out your seniority at your hire date (1,900 to 2,000) and look at our anticipated fleet size. Every airplane equals 5.5 Captains. So we would need a fleet of about 350 aircraft for all the current pilots to upgrade.

Our fleet is currently 142 airplanes, or so, with another 39 airplanes coming with the 25 RFP. That will bring us to 180, depending on what happens to the 19 ATR's.

Granted, most of the pilots at ASA are young, i.e. not even close to retiring. But, a few will retire, and a few will go to Southwest, Jet Blue, Air Tran, etc. Also, as a law of statistics, attrition will increase as the pilot list grows. Here is a raw fact for you, I've been here 39 months, 150 pilots above me have left since I started and 200 have been hired behind me. I hold a decent line in the right seat of the 70. When I started, I spent 18 months on reserve. The Junior captain is around 65th percentile. I'm at the 75th percentile now. If these 25 aircraft do show up in ASA paint, then I'll get a left seat award probably around a year from now. From what I hear through cheif pilots and MEC guys is 2004 is DFW expansion. Last year Skywest and CHQ grew rapidly in DFW. CHQ is moving on to JFK and ASA is backfilling. ASA will operate 85-90% of DFW Connection flying by end of year. Those resourses are coming from ATL as well as new 70's (5 for DFW, 8 for ATL). But, these 25 aircraft for next year are slated to return ATL to as it was.

Remember, your QOL is very dependent on your position in the hiring wave. Get on early, and the ride is great. Get on the tail end and you'll never see the other side. ASA's wave is just starting.

A nice assumption but totally incorrect as we will never see these 25 airplanes in ASA paint, because as any one knows these will be used as bargaining chips in our up coming negotiations.
But dream on, if it will make your day feel better

Wow, with that crystal ball you have, can you tell me what the correct powerball numbers will be for Sat. night?

Kidding of course.

I agree, they will use them as a bargaining tool, but Mgt. wants this growth just like we do, it might get ugly but in the end I think we will see them.

Lots of things change over the course of a year, and at ASA things change every Monday morning at the marketing meetings.

My point being nobody knows until it happens.

Well I'm not kidding. I want those numbers...I'll even share! :D

does asa still hire into the atr's? is the upgrade faster in the atr? is there a seat lock?

thanks
Yes, ASA still hires into the ATR's, if nobody bids the FO openings. There would be a one year seat lock to the RJ 200 and no seat lock going to the 700.

There is not nearly as many openings for ATR FO slots, but they have a class of 8 to 10 every four to six months. Just depends on attrition and the number of folks bidding to the RJ.

Recently RJ Captains have been bidding the ATR, but if there have been any CRJ FO's come over to ATR FO, it has been just one, or two. Most of the FO movement is from the ATR to the CRJ700.
