What is the time frame for holding a captain line on the 70 as opposed to holding one on the 50?...what is the reserve time gonna be on the 70, 1 yr? 2yrs?

That's like asking when will oil drop below $90. What may be true now may change in 1 week depending on attrition and the industry.

The most recent final award had a 70 Captain hired 6/2005.
The most junior capt on this same award was hired 4/2005.

Isn't it about 8+ years to hold a line on the 70, and about 5+ years to hold a line on the 50? If so, take that number, subtract your seniority, and that's how long you'll be on reserve!

Leave the 70 alone unless you enjoy being scheduling's little biatch forever.

I think it's running about 8 months on the 50 to hold a conversion line.

When I was an ATR FO I flew with a Captain who switched over to the 70. He took the 70 because he was going to be on reserve on either the 70 or the 50 at the time he switched. He opted for the extra pay, and ended up regretting it. Had he chose the 50, he would have been off reserve sooner, and his QOL and pay would have been better because he could have controlled his schedule.

Buyer beware.

Go with the ATR!!!! Forever, ever, ever, ever. Ok until December when they go away. But joke aside, things could change tomorrow. So go with what is important to you. QOL or extra $3 hr and a rocket!!!

Fuel prices will make the 50 go away in time. If something drastic happens with our fleet maybe the 70 would be a comfortable place to already by typed

Pretty bad to say, but even if you hold a line you are schedulings bitch. Think about it like this......

You are giving up one extra day off a month to hold Captain, as opposed to an F/O. Everybody is pretty much flying to their minimum days off anyway.

You are pretty much guaranteed four day trips, if you are holding a line with less than 15 years of seniority. At least on reserve you have a partial shot at something less.

I figure the 70 legs are longer than the 50, so perhaps it bumps the average leg time up quicker to 30 in 7, for less use than the 50. It would fit me fine not to fly an abundance of 5 leg days.

Reserve sucks, so might as well let it begin. I put my bid in for the 70- I may revise my thinking in a year, or less.

I was hired in early 2001 and still can't hold a captain line on the -700. I could hold my pick of 4 days weekends on, or some partial weekends as captain on the -200.

I'm pretty sure the new contract lets you bid back and forth now, so it really doesn't matter does it?

It looks like it's a 24 month seat lock when you go back to the 200:

Notwithstanding paragraph G.6.a., above, a pilot who bids for and is awarded a position with a lower hourly rate of pay will incur a twenty four (24) month category freeze

And it also looks like it's at the company's discretion:

7. Seniority notwithstanding, the Company may:
a. Bypass a Captain bidding for a category with a lower hourly rate of pay at the same domicile.
