APA Information Hotline

This is Gregg Overman, APA Communications Director, with the APA Information Hotline for Tuesday, May 18.

APA SPECIAL BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING: The APA Board of Directors convened beginning at 1 PM today for a Special Board Meeting at APA HQ in Fort Worth. The Board met in executive session this afternoon to discuss a variety of issues.

Tomorrow’s agenda includes five hours with well-known airline industry analyst Michael Boyd. Mr. Boyd will give a presentation on the future of the Regional Jet in open session beginning at 10 AM Central. Mr. Boyd’s presentation will be followed by a question-and-answer session with the Board. All members in good standing are welcome and encouraged to attend and listen to Mr. Boyd’s presentation and the Q&A session in their entirety.

The meeting is scheduled to continue through Friday.

So Boyd is being paid to give his opinion on RJ's to a group who hates RJ's. Gee, I wonder what his assessment will be.

I'm convinced Boyd has no clue what he's talking about, he only thinks he does. He loves to point out when he was right, but given enough tries, even a blind squirrel finds a nut once in a while. Remember what he said about the RJ years ago?

Here's what he's gonna say:

"Passengers hate the RJ."
What he won't point out is that they're more than willing to pay extra to fly on one if it gets them to their meeting two hours earlier. Or that people have been saying Southwest is a cattle herding operation for years, and that they'll never seriously threaten the major's business travel. Hmm, I wonder how they're doing now.

"RJ's are tapped out."
Sounds good when talking to a mainline group. Unfortunately he's not going to mention that the market for the 70-90 seat aircraft are already being flown by regional carriers, and everyone agrees that's where the growth is. Even the EMB 170 series is being flown by regionals. Sure, AA pilots may see them, but their pay scales are going to be severely depressed because of it.
Don't forget about the enormously promising used-RJ market.

Read up on his website where he toots his own horn about being right. Most of those predictions are ludicrously obvious.
"...we predicted that 727s would become as rare as a shark attack in Nebraska."
No kidding! Is this a prediction for aircraft, or shark attacks, because their both blatently obvious.

"draggin’ traffic growth, draggin’ demand, draggin' capacity, draggin’ aviation leadership from Washington, and draggin’ financial returns for the airline industry."
A genius! I never saw that coming, what with the fuel prices and all...oh wait he didn't predict those. At least CNBC did.

Maybe APA should get Maria Bartiromo to speak. Knows about as much about aviation, and much easier on the eyes.

727 as rare as...

dimtwit needs to look around a little
more...FEdex, UPS, NAC, Miami Air,
Champion Air, and so on. When did
he make that prediction? Right after
9/11? Duh, everyone was parking
their older equipment. My personal
feeling is that the 72 is the jet version
of the DC-3, and with some of
those DC-9's and 73's they will soldier
along for quite a while...they're cheap
to buy/lease, and there are parts all
over the world...because of the low cost
of the airframes the above types will
be the choice of charter/on demand
operations for some time to come...
don't need high utilization to pay for
them.

where did they (and the DC-10/md-11 and
L-1011's go)? ETOPS as much as anything
else killed them.

As far as leadership...I hope that noone
is looking to Washington, Dristrict of Crime
for that! There's a war on! Market forces
will continue to benifit the airlines that can
give the flying public what they want, and
the companies that can respond to those
forces will continue to grow. The culture
of companies like AMR preclude rapid
changes, their buerocratic inertia is akin
to the Feds and a consultant is as big
a waste as giving DCarty $82M to not
let the door hit him in the a$$ on the
way out!

How long would that $82M have kept the
TW guys and gals working? And where
does a company threatening bankruptcy
get that kind of money to give to execs
on the way out?

Of course, lack of vision and adaptability
plagues my management too, but
oh yeah, I don't see the big picture!

P.S. Looked at Boyd's site...brilliant move
to go from AA to Braniff...some expert on
the future of aviation! What is that old
saying about those that can't do teach?
