I wanted to hit up the Fed Ex guys and find out where some of you live outside of Memphis yet still close to a lake(i.e. Wakeboarding/Skiing). If possible, it would be great if it were close enough to drive to the MEM hub. I have a wife and 3 small children. My wife and I are both from Memphis and have NO intrest in going back. We currently have a house in Cincinnati and are 10 minutes from a 2100 acre lake and we would like to still be able to do the family thing on a lake. I've looked at some of the areas around Memphis and can't really figure out what's the best choice? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

p.s. Also, is Arkabutla lake still snake infested or is it ok now?

Friends of mine have Fed Ex family members and they have gorgeous lake houses on Pickwick Lake. It borders TN/MS. They actually live on a cove there that is nicknamed the "Fedo-Ghetto" or "FedEx Cove." I believe they have 8-10 families there. It's only a little over an hour from MEM, low taxes and 0 crime. It was cool watching a bunch of FedEx guys floating around on their big purple checks!

I would also like to live by a lake, but can't afford it!

I will be in MEM for IOE in a few weeks and would like to know of a safe part of town to go check out. I might be moving with my wife and kids (7 & 9) in the summer, first probably to a 3 bed apartment. We now live in TX, close to Dallas. House is on the market, probably will sell by the summer, after school finish.

I was told that many people work in MEM but live in MS, is that because of taxes? I heard Germantown was nice, anybody been there? What about schools?

Thanks. You are appreciated!!

TN does NOT have a state income tax....MS does have a state income tax. I'd pick Germantown any day over the MS area. (You might also check out Collierville. It's been years since I've been there, but I hear that it's an "up and coming" place to live, too.)

If you are going to put your kids in public schools Germantown, north of Poplar Avenue and Collierville are the only options in TN. In those towns you can't turn around without bumping into other pilots. Hernando, in north Mississipi is a small but rapidly growing option too. In Desoto County make sure you will be in the 'Desoto Central' school district.

A freind of mine in Memphis claims private high schools cost more than college for his three kids.

The Collierville YMCA is a great place for kids in the summer - your wife will probably like it too. For wining and dining you can't beat the Poplar corridor in east Memphis, Germantown and Collierville. You can say the same about shopping too unless you stick to Walmart.

Thank you guys. I will check Germantown and Collierville out. They don't seem to be too far from the airport. Should not be bad driving at night time!!

Yeah, but don't forget the taxes you pay for most of Shelby county due to King Willy annexing everything adjacent to his kingdom and then bringing no services despite paying those taxes.

I would suggest Southaven or Hernando for immediate closeness, because there is plenty of access to Arkabutla Lake, an Army Corps of Engineering Reservoir. Its not the greatest looking water, but I've been boating on it many times and the nearest launch to me (I lived in Southaven) was only 20 minutes away and it was never crowded save the bass boats after the normal workday. To top it off, it is PRACTICALLY EMPTY of other rec boating, save the one sailing club that circuits the wind fetch that makes up the southern part of the lake, but by mid summer, hey, now wind to speak of!

Additionally, if you want better water, you aren't too far from Enid Lake and the other one further south (can't think of it right now), the former a 45 minute drive from Southhaven, and a little less from Hernando or Olive Branch.

Good luck on your hunt, and enjoy the home values. Hey, if you need to buy a crashpad house to rent out for some more income and a good investment, mine is for sale! ;)
