Check out AT&T, they have a Nort America addon to their plans for I think like $20.00 and you can use some of their GSM (or dual) phones in Europe - will cost you a lot though.

I use the internet for that.
www.callserve.com or www.net2phone.com and a there are a few others.
All you need is your laptop (assuming you have one) internet access and a headset and of you go....

tmobile.

excellent coverage.

.99/min in europe

Our company has just issued all of us TMobile phones. Have to say so far I'm impressed with domestic coverage, thought it would be a lot worse.

Since we have these phones I've only been to Cancun, coverage is good there. I would assume that goes for any metropolitan area in Mexico.

I was in the bahamas a few months ago and they are not GSM yet. I read in the paper there that they are planning on having a network up and running in a year. AT&T will work there then.

unlocked phones

I found out that most phones domestic companies sell are "Locked". This means you can only use an AT&T phone with them...or a Sprint phone with Sprint.

The problem is if you have a cool phone but switch carriers....you are dead in the water.

The "Lock" is a programming thing and I'm sniffing around to find a computer nerd who can do it 'off the record'.

In Asia you can buy the same phones "Unlocked"!! Get a Motorola V60 overseas, come home and pop in your AT&T sime card and there you go. Travel overseas for an extended period and pop in a local card from that country. Come home and tired of AT&T, get cingular and pop in their card but keep your new phone.

I'm trying to have a bud who flys with JAL get me a new phone...and a job.

I just bought a Cingular phone in NYC [motorola v400 i think] and you have to be careful and ask the dealer.

1. Is it tri band or greater [so it works anywhere in the world].

2. Is it network unlocked. [very important] you may be able to get it unlocked by a computer nerd but some dealers do sell them already unlocked.

You will pay more for the phone if you are not signing up for their service however it will work on any sim card you use.

I brought my sim card with me from New Zealand and it worked fine in NYC and also back here in NZ.

Watch out though because I had the choice of AT n T or another network for service in the USA and there was a price difference of about $1.15 per minute between the two.

Personally, i just use those calling cards that you by in the supermarkets etc. Much much cheaper for outgoing calls. I asked my friends to text message me when they were home and I just called them back using the calling card. The cost was .03c min to NZ, compared with mobile costs of $3.50 [me calling them] or $2.50 [ them calling me - you will get charged to recieve calls].

Hope this helps.

T- Mobile is the carrier you want to go with because they are one of the few US phone companies that use triple band phones that are used around the globe.

Make sure when you get the phone that you get the unlock code for your phone. You will need this if t- mobile doent have an agreement with that country. If there is no agreement then you can buy a pre-paid sim card for you phone in the country you are in and it works great.

I have used it on many islands and Canada. Another co-worker of mine uses it in Europe all the time and the rates are very reasonable.
