So the boss wants to give the crews a bonus program based on how well the crew can save on fuel purchases. Anyone have any ideas? I just cant think of a fair, easily determined way to do it? We certainly dont want to spend more time figuring out how much we saved than we do flying the airplane. This is both a 91 and 135 operation so we often dont have a choice on which FBO's we go to. I just dont think there is an accurate way to measure the amount of money saved by shopping around, tankering, etc. Thanks for any ideas you might have!

The best way to really monitor how you're doing is to just keep a running total on ALL of your fuel purchases and how many gallons uplifted. This way you can always have a figure for your average price per gallon. Just set up a benchmark goal system based on that. Bonus for hitting $3.65/gal., $3.55/gal, and so on.

However, my guess would be that this summer you'll just be lucky to maintain whatever your current average is.

Actually you do. Tell the 135 company where you will be purchasing fuel unless it is a quick turn. Bill the ground fee's to the client. They want to go to Signature in TEB, fine, they can pay for it.

This is what we did in my 135 days. Worked quite well. Remember, you are there to protect the bosses interests, not the 135 company. Your boss has made it clear the fuel is his interests.

We certainly try to choose the FBOs we use. Sometimes we give in to a customer who wants a particular FBO especially if they have already arranged services there. They pay the fees if we can't buy the minimum or any other fees. FBO service and location is still important, but cost is becoming the main priority. The FBO we are based at, fuel is $4.65/gal. I developed a spreadsheet/flight log that tracks our actual fuel cost on a daily basis. By buying the minimum from our base, tankering from others, using contract fuel, and researching the FBOs we are holding steady at $4.03/gal in a twin turbo-prop that is weight limited on full fuel with all but a 1-2 pax load. I've hinted at a year end bonus to reflect cost saving efforts, but it is probably falling on deaf ears. I see it more as part of the job and job security now. This summer is not looking good. In the past our owner was interested in convienance with airport and FBO selection. Now he is a little more willing to drive a little further to take advantage of an airport with cheaper services. I.e. KMIA.

How to save fuel $$$?

The best way to save fuel is to fly efficiently. Pick the most efficient altitudes and fly the appropriate profiles. Know the airplane's climb and cruise capabilities and plan accordingly. Finally, shop for fuel and tanker if and when it's appropriate. How do you track the savings? Beats the heck out of me.

Are you a fat sob or reasonably good looking? I was in IAD a few months back and by spending a few mintues talking to the girl at the desk she started calculating and decided that she could give me almost a buck a gallon discount without getting in too much trouble. ;)

Using the internet to stroke yourself just ain't original anymore..

Some have mentioned tankering. That is not always the best option. Depending on several factors, it must be planned out. Remember, it takes fuel to carry fuel. I have an excel program that is very good at telling you whether or not you should tanker. It takes several things into account, then gives you a breakout of the #s. Send me your email address and I'll be happy to email it over to you. Also, if you need an Excel spreadsheet to will automatically do the math for you let me know and I can create one for you, but you will have to let me know what variables you want in it and specifically what you want to include.

Just imagine how much she would have given you off if you were good looking!
