I am looking into a position at Manassas and am wondering about housing down there. It seems too expensive. Where do some of you live and about what does it cost to buy. How is the comute as well. Thanks in advance.

I grew up in Manassas and my parents still live there. A townhouse will set you back about 250k to 300k. A single family home with about 3 bedrooms and small (very small) yard will set you back 400+k The commute sucks and gets worse and worse every year. Infact I think Prince William County has put a "freeze" on new housing developments until they can get some of the infrastucture (roads) fixed to allow for the amount of people up there. Depending on how often and when you would have to drive to work you could look south southwest of Manassas (IE cutlett (sp?).. Warrenton... Bealton.. Remington..etc) Non rush hour these towns are within 30 mins drive of HEF VIA rtes 28 and 29. And HEF is on that side of Manassas so you wont have to drive thru Manassas to get to work. Theres not much to these towns and I dont know what the housing costs are, but they would be cheaper than Manassas. If you want to live in Manassas then its about 20 mins to get to the airport from most places in town. Rush hours are like this....530-1000 am morning rush...1100am - 1pm...lunch rush....330pm-700pm Evening rush. During rush hours it can easily take 2 to 3 times longer for any drive. If you do want to live in Manassas then there are some neighborhoods you should aviod cause they are rough.. Georgetown South (townhouse and apts), Prince Cole..they just changed the name to Centerville Gardens or something like that (apts) Cobblestone (apts near Walmart on 234). And a set of apartments behind Toys R Us on 234 by the Novac Power office (apts cant think of the name) Those are the places I wouldnt live in Manassas. Hope that helped. If you have any other questions PM me. I dont check this forum much just saw KHEF on the flightinfo main page and figued I'd check it out.

Great Cornholio

Lots of good info, thanks for the reply. I was actually looking all the way out to Culpeper and down to Fredericksburg. Manassas will be way too rich for my blood. I dont want to spend more than about 150k.

Fredericksburg starts to get expensive again (I think). Plus 95 is a mess between Fbrug and DC pretty much all times of the day unless its really late at night/early in the morning. Sounds like Culpeper or Warrenton might be pretty close to what you are looking for. Good bets to find what you want would be to go south and west of Manassas on Rtes 28,17,or 29. Anything north or east of Manassas stays pricey. You could also go west on 66 and look in the Shenandoah valley. Non-rush hour to towns in the SHD valley about 1.5 hours. Towns in SHD valley...Winchester, New Market, Harrsionburgh (College town..JMU) Luray, Woodstock. They are also in the process of adding lanes to 66 pretty much most of the way to 81.

I dont want to spend more than about 150k.

Good luck...in that part of the world, $150k won't buy you a 500 sq ft closet.

I live 50 miles outside DC and rent for a decent (not fancy) 1-bed apartment is upwards of $1000/mo...
