Plus, with 375+ pilots hired to date and another 100 or so on the way, 475 is still more than Santulli's estimate of 350-400. That's what I meant by my statement about next year not being a hiring spree.

You do have very valid points. Don't shoot the messenger, I am just repeating what Santulli told recurrent last week. He said the plan is 350 - 400 pilots per year for at least the next 4 years. This year they stated early in the year they plan to hire 475 (or something to the number). They are short pilots and will remain so as long as they are taking deliveries of new a/c. Not trying to argue, just trying to relay what we are told. You seem pretty up on this stuff, at least for not being a NJA pilot. Who do you work for?
 
This is a good question for me to take. My husband started on the 17 day schedule and I was thinking, then, that 7 days would be too long. Our daughter was a toddler (Anna's 5 now) so a week was harder for her then.

The 7&7 has gone better than I thought it would. The constant coming and going is even harder on family life I think. Dad was always leaving it seemed. That was the complaint before we switched over. Now we can all settle into the 2 routines much easier.

For my husband the constant airlining is tiring, too. The more trips there are the more "Dad's leaving" days of sadness and the more recovery-mode days. So yes, the 7 days home balance the 7 gone for our family. 10 yr old Morgan told me that he likes the 7&7 better than the 17 day schedule.

Perhaps Nota is an employee at NJA, but is not a pilot? I think the "sooner is better than later" advice is valid. No one has a crystal ball and the best laid plans can go astray. Strike while the iron's hot they say. Isn't it generally better to be at the beginning or middle of a hiring boom than the end?

Buddro, I'm not saying you are wrong. More than likely we are both wrong because stuff changes constantly around here.

One of the first things I learned when I started was that the pilots on the 7/7 were away from home 7 days at a time. I don't know how you do it; atleast I don't think I could with my family and rugrats.

iluvetops sorry to derail your thread. If you are even considering NJ you might want to send in a resume. As you can read on here it appears that there is a waiting list of sorts, so you may want to get in line.

7/7 schedule

I have been on the 7/7 since its inception at NJA. Now, I cannot imagine another schedule. I have young children. Factor this in your thinking...

1) Knowing your schedule years in advance. (absolutely priceless)
2) Each vacation is 3 weeks long. ( I have four)
3)Each break is a week off. (you can have many vacations a year with that)
4) Many fewer airline cycles. (believe me this becomes important!)
5) Just like NJW said, fewer "daddy's going to work" days. (kids seem to like that.)
6)When I get home, work doesn't even cross my mind vs. old 17 day where it always weighed on my mind. (getting the dry cleaning done in time...)
7) First and last days are pirimarily positioning to and from work days.
8) Arrive to work refreshed.

I agree. I've only been here a few months but I can tell you my wife is
thrilled to know my schedule in advance. It's good to hear that other
pilots w/ families like it so much. This is how I like to think of it. In five years
time, I'll have three weeks vacation and if I'm captain, I'll have almost 2 weeks recurrent training. So, this means for 5 months out of the year, I
will see my family 3 weeks out of each month. And in 10 years I will be with
them 3 weeks out of the month for six months. That is a lot of time home
and that's not including 12 days of sick time. So far, I love the quality of life here at NJA.
 
That's a great way to look at it! I'm going to have our 10 yr old read that. It pleases me greatly to be able to read posts like this and see...in black and white...:) how much progress has been made in achieving the professional lifestyle frac families deserve. My fingers are crossed for all the other pilots who are trying to get the 7&7 schedule.

I agree. I've only been here a few months but I can tell you my wife is thrilled to know my schedule in advance.

I second that. This is the first flying job that my wife has been looking forward to. Yes day five into six and seven will get long, but haveing seven days to be at home, and then two months out of the year that I only work one week is going to be great. I am ready for Monday to roll around so I can check in and get to work.
