Just a couple of questions about the Sabre 80. How do you like the airplane? I heard from a buddy that it is not certified for known icing. I that true and if so how does that affect your operations? Thanks for the info.
The FAA tried to ground the fleet years ago over the icing issue.
Sabreliner Corp. fought the battle and the feds changed the regs (Part 91.527) to where it was a gray area.
They were so concerned about violating their own regs that they installed boots on their airplanes.
The reg. says IFR Flight into moderate or severe icing, nothing about light.
If you get into icing conditions be cautious of stalling the horizontal stabilizer. The airplane can carry a lot of ice.
I know of two accidents where the wing carried the load but the tail couldn't.
A lot of airplane for little money.
I liked the Sabre quite a bit. Beautiful handling, like a fighter, a real pilot's airplane, nice and quiet, and the 80 had the best thrust-to-weight ratio of 'em all, from what I know of the others. Drawbacks include spar corrosion, and hodge-podge avionics . . . . and don't get too slow in the climb- keep it above .70, that's for sure.
As for the icing- I only flew a FL-based one for a year, but we never had any problem . . . fly high and fast, with a high-speed penetration on the arrival (2-1 versus 3-1) . . . know what your RAM rise is at different speeds, and use it to your advantage.
The 65 might be a better choice, though, depending on your typical mission length, and the Garett engines aren't the museum pieces the CF700's are!
