I am currently in the application process for the AF reserves. I did my AFOQT
scores were pilot: 86 nav: 86 aptitude:76 verbal:55 quan: 85
My BAT PCSM was 96
I have a 3.0 GPA and I just completed my flight medical and it looks like it will come back with good results.

My question is to those in units in FL how competive am I. I would really like to join a unit in FL and was wondering which units are in need of pilots. Any first hand information on FL units would be great. I will be visiting some units very soon so any heads up info before I go would be helpful.

FL jobs

There's the 5th SOS out of Eglin... and there's the MC-130 units at Eglin and Duke. Personally for location and the flying they do, you can't beat that. To it's Air Force
I used to fly Mc130s out of the 5th. If you really want to know the life you'd be living, PM or email me. I will tell you - put it this way - I left the unit. The flying in AFSOC is fun, for a while. Flying an NVG low level is cool...the first 1-2 hours....after 5 it's not. Showing up to do that part time is cool. Except when they have no $. For a new guy like you - you would enjoy it, but again, they don;t have much $ right now. You would spend the first 2 years in training...after that it depends on the budget.
Your scores are in the ball park - cometitive. For the 5th they are. The 5th is TRYING to hire Navs like it's nobody's business. They can use a pilot or two also, from what I know. I don't think many folks are applying to the units since they got a whiff of the ops tempo. As far as the 711th at Duke - flying Mc130 Talon Is...I dunno about their manning situation. The area is great, I still live there...but opt to drive 2.5 hours to a reserve unit in MS vs one 30 min up the road - for many reasons.

There is also an HC130 and MH60 unit at Patrick. Rescue - under AFSOC also now. Great location - they had a high ops tempo and I hear folks are leaving after they demobilized. As far as other units - the 125th fighter group out of Jax has F15s. Doubt you'd get on with them due to the large # of fighter guys out there that are currently qualified, BUT units DO sometimes hire guys off the streets - they want folks to join and grow in the unit. Apply. Can't hurt. That's it for FL AF guard/reserves as far as I know. Around the area is Robins, GA - B1s. Maxwell AFB in Montgomery, AL - C130H2 -hiring. Keesler AFB - C130Js and WC130Js.

Good luck.

Florida Makos

There's also the 482 Fighter Wing "Makos" down at Homestead ARB flying the F-16. It's a reserve unit attached to 10th AF.
I'm thinking it's the same as the Jax unit when it comes to hiring. But, they aren't hiring you if your package isn't in.:D
