My CFI expires this month and I currently work for a part 135 op. Given the circumstances, it appears that 61.197 gives me two options to renew (or maybe not).

I can either do a refresher course (61.197a2iii) or, and in lies the question, does my employment in a 135 op provide an opportunity to fulfill the requirement?

I'm certain simply holding a flight instructor certificate will not soley fulfill the requirement per 67.197(a)(2)(ii) which says "served as a company check pilot, ...., or flight instructor in a part 121 or 135 operation, .....

However, as a current and qualified PIC per 135.338, could I simply endorsed another 135 pilot's log book and 135 training record for any portion of their annual 135 check or just any training in general?

Anyway, the answer is probably not the one I'm hoping for but worth posing before I spend the $ on a renewal course.

Dude,

put a list of your students together...you should have this...required by law!

See if more than 80% of them passed the ride's you signed them off for.

If you have at least 80% pass rate, on five or more students, walk into the FSDO with the list, give it to the nice gentleman working there, he will probably double check it, and then give you a new certificate.....easy as cake. And **CENSORED****CENSORED****CENSORED****CENSORED** cheap too....whats a piece of paper, 1 cent, a pencil, 10 cents, and gas to the FSDO...$5 to $50 depending on where you live!:D

Your question regards 14 CFR 61.197(a)(2)(ii). In order to qualify for renewal under this subparagraph, you must be designated as a company check pilot, chief flight instructor, company check airman, or flight instructor (or in a position involving the regular evaluation of pilots) by your Part 121 or 135 employer. Simply signing another pilot's logbook on your own volition is inadequate, and does not meet the requirements of the regulation.

Your employer makes this designation, not you.

Check with your POI. Many inspectors will be very willing to sign you off for your instructor at the same time they're conducting a regular proficiency hop. It's a common courtesy expended by many POI's. No other records needed.

If you are a current and qualified part 135 captain then you should be able to walk into your local fsdo with completed 8710, company photo id, company flight check form showing that you are a current captain, current medical, and other credentials and you should be able to get the sign off right there. Obviously this is a courtesy and may vary from fsdo to fsdo but this is what most of the guys did at my former company, relatively easy and painless.

I just did exactly that. The POI for my airline had me fill out an 8710 and off I go for another two years. Definitely look into it.
