A question for you all-

Recently I went to the doctors for an aniexty type condition. It all started a couple months ago I experienced some chest pain and went in and had everything checked out.. I came out alright with nothing to show. Its just over the past two months I've experienced more aniexty than normal.. giving me a nervousness type feeling/ myself thinking about my breathing rate... etc. It comes and goes and its very psoriatic. Anyways.. i ended up going to the doctors and they put me on this pill called Paxil. The doctor said its balancing some chemicals so my nerves are not overreacting. So my question is will this interfere with me getting hired later on at an airline? I'm only 18 hold a private single and multi and currently working on the instrument with a first class medical.

What do you guys think? Know of anyone thats had a similar condition?

Thanks!

My GUESS is that you cannot even hold a Medical while taking something like Paxil.

Frucking Doctors...so quick to give this $hit out. Unreal.

Get more opinions, I personally would shy away from any doctor who is quick to prescribe that $hit.

Hmm.. very interesting... I wasn't aware Paxil was such a harmful drug. I told my mom what the doctor gave me and she was very suprised and concerned herself.. Thanks for your input though Gulfstream. I'm going to give the doctors a call tomorrow and get myself off the paxil and see what other options I may have...

If anyone else has any first hand experiences or knowledge of the topic your comments are very much appreciated.

Thanks

It is most likely a disqualifying medication. Don't fly on it. As long as you stop taking it before your next FAA medical, the FAA does not need to know about it. (You do need to list the visit to the doctor, however.)

Lay off the caffeine, try some meditation, and stop taking these drugs. Gulfstream is right: Physicians today are trained by big Pharma and know nothing else than to write scripts. The next time you feel an anxiety attack come on just start laughing, and picture Dick Cheney in pink leotards and a tutu. You'll be fine.

Do not and I repeat DO NOT take Paxil. I had a friend who was on it, it was not pretty. When he went off of it he said it was worse than death pain wise and he cant remember a thing while he was on withdrawl. He lost a month of his life from it.
STOP WHILE YOUR AHEAD!

I just had a doc try to give me wellbutrin to stop smoking, threw out the samples the second she was out of the room.

I heard the same thing about Paxil. terrible $hit..but it costs a lot and doctors prescribe it easy....hummm...

I would go with the above advice. Exercise, good sleep, mentally challenging work......throw in a little pu$$y every so often and a few beers with friends here and there....

that will cure your anexiety.

Everyone has had bouts of boredom, anxiety, sleeplessness...thats all part of life if you ask me.

But it certainly is not reason for reaching for Paxil

I would get many other opinions then look at getting off that $hit. Forget you ever took it and never admit it to any faa/company doctor again in your life.

Flying IS FUN (regardless of what you read here)......I bet 90% of us here WOULD be on Paxil if we couldnt go fly fun s$hit every so often!!!!!!

Thanks a lot guys for all the replies.. I'm shocked after reading what all you have said.. I'm definitely dropping the paxil.. I've only been on it for two days so it shouldn't effect anything.

Thanks again,
Chad

N/P, luckly you didnt wait to stop, my friend had horrible effects for the first month after he started to. Its nasty stuff. send me a private message if you want more info/on stuff that could help without the meds.

Be Happy

Flightinfo is all the anti-depressant you'll ever need!

Chad,

Paxil is a definite no-no when you are actively flying. I have no idea what the time frame is that you are supposed to wait to fly after using it....but this came from an aviation med site.

Antidepressants and psychoactive medications: The FAA will not approve any of the medications in this category--including serotonin uptake inhibitors (Celexa, Effexor,Prozac, Paxil, and Zoloft) as well as other psychoactive medications (Lithium, Buspar, Elavil, Sinequan, Amitripityline, etc.). Pilots who undergo treatment with these medications can be cleared to return to flight duty after they have stopped taking the medication and the treatment issues have been resolved. See Depression in the VFS Medical Information Center. These medications are sometimes used for non-psychiatric conditions, but are still not approved for use in flight in this context.

In case you want to research it further, it came from.....

If you are having anxiety problems, try getting into a structured excercise program. Join a gym and get a personal trainer for a few sessions. Tell him/her about your situation. Chances are the excercise will alleviate most of the anxiety issues you are having by making you much more relaxed. Good luck.

Ditto to what was said above about dropping the drugs, start exercising and even learn proper breathing technique. There are herbal supplements available for anxiety which you could try, but what's the worst that could happen when you have an anxiety attack? Maybe you'll collapse or be short on breath, but so what, eventually you'll have to get up and go home ... don't be embarrased. A lot of times the anxiety is in fear of having an actual panic attack itself, versus in your case, flying.

If my parents named me after a country in the continent of Africa, I'd be anxious as well.

Haha.. thanks for all the replies guys. I've dropped the paxil and I'm going to see someone in an effort about going to cure this in a different way that doesn't involve drugs. To tell you the truth I've started working out lately and I've felt better each day... I still know I'm going to be nervous on that first solo flight (since having these attacks) but I'll get comfortable doing it again sooner or later...

Thanks again guys

Good luck conquering that anxiety and good luck with your training.

Med records......

One thing to keep in mind down the road....all medical doctors are required to supply patients medical information to the MIB....seriously, the medical informatioin buerau. This include Rx prescribed. make sure you tell the doctor you dont need this stuff, tell him if its not too late you never took it, make it part of your medical record at his office.....

This could save you tons of heart ache down the road when you go for your 1st class and ATP....good luck young man!

Docs will hand out anti-depressants like candy at halloween but try to get treated for chronic pain and they act like you were asking for heroin.

I guess now they are finding out that the millions of kids they've had on Ritalin for the past decade really, probably wasn't a good idea. Gee, maybe kids ARE supposed to be boisterous and have fun instead of being drooling zombies...

Maybe if the whole population of this country is on some sort of anti-depressant, they won't pay attention to what's going on in Washington... TC

Paxil… Nasty stuff. You cannot fly if you take this drug. My ex-girlfriend who was a pilot had to stop taking this to get back into flying. She went through some very tough times, both physically and mentally to get back to “normal.” Needless to say it did not help our relationship. She had to take anther pill(can’t remember which one) to help ease her off the Paxil. Get more than one opinion.

A certain amount of anxiety is normal. You might also try a new diet, exercise program, and some other techniques to help reduce your stress level. Obtaining all your ratings can cause a lot of stress in itself.

Make sure you examine all your options…

Good luck
