Hi,

I got the email to call for the 5-10 minutes pre-screening telephone interview. It's for the lance in OAK. I few questions popped in my head:

What is the usual the time frame between the phone screening and the interview? Then between the interview and training? My wife and I are going to Europe for 2 weeks on the 15th and she would hate me if I had to cancel it!

Also, if it all works out at the interviews, what is OAK like? Good stuff and bad stuff?

I'm really excited about this, I've been trying to become a freight dog for so long!!! I would really appreciate any info, thanks!

Take your trip and enjoy. AMF isn't doing any training till after the new year. They are way to busy during "peak". Not only that but if you do get on, it's the last vacation you will get for awhile. If your concerned about missing a call I would suggest you contacting Jay and let him know what your doing and that you don't want him to think your ignoring him.

OAK is expencive and it takes awhile to move up in equipment at that base. Once your on you can bid other bases but it may take a few months. There is a lot of good flying out there so you had best be up on your IFR skills. Also don't be affraid to say no if your not comfortable with some thing. If you do get on ask the other pilots at the base lots of questions. You will learn more about the runs and the area from them than from any other source.

I hear that Jay gives one hell of an interview so be up to speed. I highly suggest you study the REGs and your jepp plates.

Good luck and enjoy your vacation.

I flew a Lance out of OAK for Ameriflight. When I was there, they had some of the best schedules around. You couldn't kick me off of 205A/219 run (leaves OAK at 1230 and gets back around 2100 - no layovers), plus I used to commute from SAN. I only left because I got an outbased Chieftain run out of MYF (no more commute).

All in all, this was in 2000/early 2001. Ameriflight was really good to me. I don't know what it's like now... Also, I interviewed in BUR, and my "phone" interview consisted of just what to bring to the real interview basically. But it may have changed in the years since I left.

The time between your interview and phone screening can definetly vary. I have 2 friends in Phoenix who were interviewed this year and were given a phone interview on a Wednesday, and then asked to interview the following Tuesday. It can be quick.

SpiffAV8 is right about there not being anymore newhire training for the rest of the year. I believe the next newhire class will be the 2nd week of January, or somewhere around then. This is all due to "peak season." On average, newhires only wait a few weeks between interviewing and beginning newhire class, but this too can also change.

I've heard things about the OAK base, and I've heard better things about it. Just depends on who you are asking. Keep in mind there are always opportunities to transfer bases after you build up seniority.
