Hi all,
question for you guys that have written your ALTP exams already.

How to prepare? Is it sufficient to work through the ASA Airline Pilot Test Prep? or do you need to obtain the other books as listed on the FAA website?

Is it worth doing a course through somebody like ALLATPS? or should you just wing it alone?

I know this isn't really answering your question, but if you want to study online, check out www.myairplane.com . You have to register but it's free, it's the only place that I know of that you can practice only. Goodluck.

I don't know how much FAA experience you have. From your profile, you might be a canuck pilot? At any rate- ATP (the company is not called ALL-ATPS, that's just their phone number) provides a pretty good gouge on the FAR Part 121 ATP written exam.

Pretty **CENSORED****CENSORED****CENSORED****CENSORED**ed wordy for "sitting in front of a computer for 10 hours clicking through the Q&A".

That's just it- you DON'T need to read the question forty times, you DON'T need to refer to the exhibits, you DON'T need to chase charts... unless you have a poor command of the English language or are completely alien to the FAA.

This is from experience- I instructed for ATP and therefore proctored those exams for well over a year. There were two busts that I saw that entire time.

One cheated because he couldn't speak English,
and the other chose to waste the 10 hours "double-checking the figures" from the prep.

Pay 300 bucks, listen to the proctor, walk away with a pass later that afternoon. That isn't for everybody, but it certainly serves it's purpose well.

No, not canuck pilot, though I know some! I'm South African, flying around Namibia at the moment, coming over to the States in October (getting married), or as a colleague said recently...getting my ball-and-chain rating!:D not quite;)

Maybe you can explain something else for me...if you write the part 121 ALTP exam, then you can only fly part 121 as ALTP rated crew? if you wanna fly part 135 as eg. captain on B190, then you need to write the Part 135 ALTP exams too? as an add-on rating?

I'd never tell anyone not to study. It wouldn't hurt, certainly.

The FAA might have actually changed the way the test is set up. Ask the person who answers the phone at the 800-number.

Ahh, South Africa! We had the owner of a charter company in SA come over to get the ATP cert. Great guy. I also flew with a Zimbabwean pilot who flies the DHC-5 Buffalo from Zim to the Sudan... air relief. Hell of a job to get your a$$ shot off for. Both guys were super pilots and great to hang around. You can take either the -135 or -121 written and fly either checkride. They're interchangeable.

The performance q's are about as boring as they get. Don't bog yourself down chasing the charts, just memorize the answer.
