Alaska Airlines to add more SLC service!

The next salvo has been launched!!

Looks like Alaska Spirit is growing in SLC! AS is ramping up operations there! More flights announced to CA, Vegas and BOI.

Interesting to note that SkyWest is not factored into this new equation! Maybe we will be kicking them to the curb?

If Alaska had added in more SkyWest flying without pulling it from somewhere else, that would have been a paradigm shift in the AS/OO relationship. So far OO has only operated Airgroup owned/leased airplanes on behalf of the Airgroup.

My money is on SkyWest operating those CRJs as long as there are Eskimos on the tail.

I think this is great. Every time both airlines add routes on top of each other, they create overlap. Overlap is something NOT needed when any airline is considering a merger. The Dept of Justice and Dept of Transportation want the consumer to have choices, and recent mergers had to show few overlapping routes to help justify the decision. DL and NWA only had overlap between respective hubs. UAL and CAL had very few also, with hubs at different cities.

I see this "fight" as a great thing, allowing internal growth hopefully at DL, doing flying that Western Airlines used to do before Leo dumped the routes and moved the planes East. This will force change hopefully.

You know, some other airline tried this awhile back and quickly moved out. JetBlue added SFO, SAN, BUR, and LAS I believe. Even with the THEN CEO's religious affiliation (popular in SLC) and their RES center being located there, they eventually left those markets.

You don't think Delta would just drop the new routes to appease the DOJ, after forcing a merger? If Delta waits too long American might be in a position to go after Alaska.

An a different note, I saw an airline comparison chart for revenue. Even after the merger with both companies combined we'll be playing catch up with Delta. Impressive numbers for Delta.

So you think jet blue trying to establish more service on the west coast and failing is a fair comparison for Alaska doing it? Just out of curiosity why do you think alaska's profits and stock are so high? Is it just because nobody had tried to compete with us on the west coast? Maybe it's something else...like an extremely disciplined and well run airline with fantastic service compared with the typical airline experience in this country..not gonna be as easy a nut to crack as you seem to think..me thinks that the big eye on the mountain in Atlanta is probably focused on where you guys are gonna get killed in the next 10 years..international(hello emirates)

Aren't you in a code share with Emirates?

I'm saying SLC isn't an easy market to crack, even for an airline with "connections", and I'm not talking RJ feed. JetBlue tried, and failed, only keeping LGB and JFK. AK will have a similar try, and may very we'll end up the same way. No real explanation of the new routes either, kinda like a dart board?

And the ME airlines will NOT kill the big 3 US carriers. We have a geographic advantage, not many Americans want to go to DXB first and then backtrack to Europe or Asia. And, as an analyst pointed out, some of the possible point to point route possibilities are questionable at best. Emirates may start flights from certain European cities to the US that now only fill 757s to some of the biggest US hubs, like UAL's at EWR. If UAL can't fill a plane larger than a 757 to one of the biggest US connecting hubs with connections everywhere in the US (EWR), then how can EK expect to fill a 777-300ER consistantly? Understand yet?

Doesn't matter. The GOVT wants competition. Once you compete, it will be evidence at a proposed merger hearing. Look at your merger with AA. Not much overlap except from your hubs to their hubs. Where you got hit was the number or percentage of flights TOGETHER at certain slotted airports, like DCA. To get approval, you had to deal. What other airports in the US have this type of hype? Maybe LGA and ORD. Any future mergers will probably have to give up some slots at any of those airports. Other than that, your airlines didn't have very much overlap.
