Midwest screwed more than a few guys with that "wink, wink" we won't accept your resignation. Guess what? They accepted all the resignations, even knowing they had put guys out on the street for the second time in 14 months! Tread very carefully with that. What was send in person was VERY different that what they did, and how the acted. The company did nothing to help us out. All we heard was, "well, you can re-apply". The union could do nothing to help. Good luck.

well the example at Air Tran I had heard was from TWA guys going there from furlough status at AMR. they're now being recalled back to AMR. one went TWA -> AAI -> Eagle -> Cathay -> AA.

so take it on a case by case basis, i guess. discuss it with your former MEC and verify that the company will not accept your resignation if you do resign.

Well I was furloughed in OCT 2001 from TWA, hired by Airtran in 2005 and resigning my seniority never came up once.

I was hired in 2003 at AirTran and I had to sign a document that had me resign my seniority from my furloughed carrier. From what I recall, I had to fill in the address of the carrier and the name of the HR manager. Then they would mail this form over to the carrier(UAL). I'm not sure if this is still the practice today, but that's how it was done back then.

I was a UAL furloughee and UAL had one of those "wink-wink" policies also. In my case it didn't matter since I chose to stick around AirTran and not go back. Just about all of the UAL guys that I know haven't gone back. Most of us were furloughed so long ago we are now junior captains at AirTran, it just didn't make sense.

I flew with an f.o. that was prior TWA/American a few weeks ago and he made it clear that he will go back to American this summer when he gets recalled. He told me that he will go back at $105/hr as an F.O. being that he keeps all his longevity from his TWA days. With upgrades at AirTran taking longer lately, AirTran may see more f.o.'s leaving this next year.

Even so, upgrade at AirTran is still relatively quick compared to the other majors. Age 65 will have little affect on us, we have a very young pilot group. Overall, I guess it depends on your circumstances, but I believe it's a risky move to go back to one of the majors now.
