Airliners.net is a great site for photos but I usually skip the commentary.

It is a nice shot, and lucky. He sold it to a newspaper so I guess maybe his hobby isn't such a waste of time.

As for "saving the day", well maybe not but it still doesn't hurt anything to call. According to the flightglobal article linked above the only symptom was an engine surge as all the debris was coming from the thrust reverser and not the core.
