I just heard an amusing little tale about how decisions are made about what sort of aeronautical technology we need to pursue.
At one time, the government was considering sinking lots of money into the development of sonic or supersonic airliners. What problem would this solve? Well, the airliners of the day took about six hours to go coast-to-coast. An SST could do the same job in three hours.
Most Americans felt that this problem was not significant enough to spend a lot of money on. Besides, what would they do with the three hours they gained? They'd probably watch television.
So why not put television on airliners?
And that, boys and girls, is why you can now see Frasier and ESPN on Delta.
