i have heard (and i hate to spread rumors!) (but here i go) that air wiskey (air Wisconsin Airlines) may be loosing hteir atlanta base of flying....Any info?

ATL base?

I didn't know that they even had one. They only have a few RJ's a day in there. Seems to me like there was not enough operations out of ATL for AW to warrant a base. Learn something new every day.

If you didn't see the earlier thread, yes....Whisky will no longer be flying for Air Tran. Air Tran says that the loads have rebounded since 9-11 and that the RJ routes now can handle a 717. It's Ok, they will just paint them in the new United colors and send them to ORD and IAD.

Management is telling us that they may keep the base open for the UAL flying (we have several flights from ATL to both ORD and IAD).
I imagine they are only saying this to keep all the FAs from immediately jumping ship before the AirTran stuff phases out this summer.

that and because they don't want to pay for moving a bunch of displaced crewmembers - they will keep it long enough to reduce it as much as they can with attrition

Airtran realized that RJs at low fares couldn't make money......Hmmmm....When will Delta figure that out????

Bye Bye---General Lee:rolleyes:

How about..................

United says, "AirWisconsin we are having trouble backfilling ACA RJ feed out of IAD so you need to tell AirTran that you are going to jack up their rates to continue feed. Also, if you help us now we will remember it later."

AirWisconsin says, "Oh, I understand since 98% of our business is Untied Express. We will put the screws to AirTran and then they will release the 10 jets we have there to move to IAD."

I wouldn't be surprised if AirTran has another RJ feeder later. Don't you just love the conspiracy theories in this business?

The AWAC base in ATL had approx. 100 pilots and 45-50 FAs. Two of the 10 airplanes flew between TLH and TPA all day and 2 others bounced between MKE, DAY and BWI. That might be why the operation looked to small for a crew base.

The latest vacancy notice had a bunch of positions open in ORD and ATW and no backfill provided in ATL (smaller through attrition = less in moving expenses). The 146 in ATW had some line holder and reserve positions....so I see the next new hire class to have a couple of reserve spots on the 146.

Not so far from the truth....

ZW will be rolling in flying by the end of summer as United scales back mainline operations and there is a major increase in regional expansion. Yes! ZW will be back in DEN in a way bigger than ever, but also have oportunities in SEA.
The regional big jet is coming! It may be the E-190 or something bigger (737or 717). Laugh now, but I'm serious. This is already in the planning phase.

Where did you hear that load of BS...let me guess you heard it from a friend of a friend of a senior check airman that knows the guy who drinks with the secretary of the owner!!

Keep dreaming!!!

How about that theory makes absolutely no sense unless the entire AirTran operation world revolves around Air Wisconsin.

If that were true, and AirTran wanted to keep the RJ service, then why didn't AirTran simply put the RJ feed out for bid, which we did not. Also if Air Wisconsin could simply opt out, just like they did, your whole conspiracy theory falls apart.

How about taking this whole affair at face value, after all aren't facts..... just that...... facts.

Fact... General Lee is correct, you CANNOT make money selling cheap fares on RJ's, even if you are a successful low fare carrier, especially if you are using a contractor (i.e. middle man) as the provider of the service.

I take our management decision on this as being entirely economically based, at this point in time.

I agree. I'm no accountant or other money person but it seem pretty simple to me. "Making money with aircraft 101"

Option 1 - Have vast fleet, serve big and small communities, fly everywhere. Charge modest fare and fill aircraft 60 to 70. Watch costs and make cash.

Option 2 - use single type fleet, many seats (100+), fly from populated and popular places to populated and popular destinations, charge cheap fares, fill your aircraft 80 plus %. Watch costs and make cash.
