How, if at all, does the ATA impact the airlines? Would you say the ATA is working with pilots to make things better or working against pilots?

clarification is good...

The Air Transport Association is airline management run, and operates solely to "proptect" the airline industry. It is management's "sounding board". Since management cannot directly talk about competition and pricing, it is their way of getting around anti-trust issues.

The best way to explain it, I guess, would be that it is Airline Management's Union.

No, not a union, a political voice. plain and simple.

The ATA was formed in 1936 in part to combat the effectiveness of Dave Behncke's new organization for pilots, ALPA. Formed in 1931, ALPA knew its sucesses would be made on Captial Hill.

(The ATA was the main drive in organizing the airlines and their overwhelming and signifcant contribution to the WWII war effort.)

Everyone needs a voice in washington dc. Airline Manangement has the ATA. And they have deeper pockets too. They are higher in their contribution rates to the ATA's Political action committee than pilots.... Pilots have ALPA-PAC and APA-PAC. After the PACs there is soft money

Therefore, who do you think is going to get their legislation through? Money talks, something else walks.

And management/ATA doesn't care who is supporting thier legislation/issue. They will give money to Hillary Clinton if it will get them what they need. Meanwhile pilots, have to feel good about where their money goes. Their money has to support thier politician and all of his ideals...

Want to know one reason why this career is getting crappy? Because the ATA is effective and they don't have emotional political allegiances..

And don't forget the soft money :D

If all of this is news to you then you are way behind in your airline pilot career education. http://www.opensecrets.org/pacs/index.asp

To say that this organization as it is today is part of the pilot versus management battle might be a bit of a stretch regardless of how it started.

They are the political arm of the airline industry -- that part is true. There are many issues that they take stands on and one has to investigate what the position is.

The ATA's lawyers were there in full force fighting the Whitlow interpretation of the 16 hour rule.....

Management hates that hard and fast 16 hour rule... more staffing...more costs...
