Anyone who attended the ATL job fair heard anything?

specifically AirTran or ATA?
 
Don't get your hopes up too much about those job fairs. They are pretty much Kit Darby's money makers not job helpers.

Listen to some of the comments he makes on his speech before the fair (been to 3 of them thoughout the year) - Comair (ONE of the examples):

"Comair gets MOST of the FO positions filled from this show here today folks, so you're all a step ahead of those who didn't attent. Last month, more than 50 % slots were filled with your resumes."

The FACT is that Comair gets about 40 to 50 % from the academy, the rest about 30 to 40 % from recommandations and resumes walked in, and the mere 10 to 20 % is what's left for the scavengers.

Another fact is that a few of the companies he mentiones on the list don't even show up. Yes, they're box saying"drop resume here" is there, but that's about all. Why does he still mention those companies, just to make the airline list look good so that you can get convinced to buy that $150 ticket.

So I wish you all good luck by going there, but try not to get too psyched up waiting for a call. I only use those shows to get some practive with the 10 seconds of interactinf with the recruiters and "interviewing" with each company that's there.

You spend $150 to get 10 seconds worth of interview practice? How much would you give me for half an hour? Sounds like you are the sucker. Go network and leave the job fair thing to the lamo's.

It's too bad there are always going to be such little people making stupid comments on this board-otherwise this board would be a great place to get info and exchange ideas as it was meant to be.

I can't believe that you people still go to Air Inc seminars in this job market. Kit has no golden ring for you. You want a job, get your ass out there and do some real networking and talk to people all over. Send every damm resume you can. Chuck, if you don't like the facts, ignore them.

People want an advice, I give it to them.

The idiot seminars are expensive, yes, Kit's making thousands ripping NOT SUCKERS, but honest pilots who wanna try to get a job before they say goodbye to aviation for good. He provides them with a face to face with recruiters, and I bet if you were without a job you'd go for that too.

You want some FACTS, here is a fact for those who have no clue what it's like to be looking for a job - the MAJORITY of those people at the career fairs (%80 I would say) were MAJOR furlough pilots. Tell them all they're suckers because they paid $150 to be there, go ahead. What do you think they have left to do? Networking? As if it's so easy to do (most have friends from the same company that laid them off, duh).
 
Patience and Persistence

If someone gets called who went to a seminar, and you didn't go, you'll always be wondering...What If?

I know it's frustrating for everyone, but I'm glad I went (but that's me).
 
AirTran HR department will tell you - there are only three ways to get an interview at AirTran. 1) know a pilot here and have them write a recommendation letter, 2) go to the Air Fair and 3) mail a resume in to put at the bottom of that 6000 resume pile. Realistically only the first two above will net you an interview. I know of two people who have gotten interview calls for no other reason than they stood in line to talk to Jill Nidiffer. They knew no one at AirTran. They showed AirTran how bad they wanted a job. If you want any job bad enough, you will do whatever it takes to get it. Incidentally, at Air Inc. you can just pay for the job fair and save a lot of money. I agree, listening to the Kit Darby speak is probably not going to get you any jobs by itself.

Air Inc. Job Fairs

I would add my vote to the others above that say DO NOT go. Do a search for previous posts, but to sum up for the one i did go to:
1)About a 1000 pilots, 80% estimated furloughed major guys.
2)As a low time pilot (1200 then)I qualified for 3 attending
airline's MINS, took about 45 mins ea. to hand them an app,
and then have them tell me i'm not at COMPETITIVE MINS.
3)so I've had no calls from them. (neither did my friends)
4)I found it a huge wast of my time, money, and ego.

Shift of topic, did anyone go to the aviationinterviews jobfair, and have any comments? I would have liked to have gone because the guy who set it up rocks,(only $25-most as a donation to the scholarship fund he started), but I couldn't make it.
 
IT DEPENDS

If you are trying to get a job with JetBlue, then the seminar will not help you get there.

Like AFCitrus said, I believe the AirInc DFW seminar had ALOT to do with getting called. Air Tran values recommendations and/or meeting applicants face to face.

Of course, the flying time has to be in the ball park for the job you're looking for (which in today's economy is significantly higher than in the past).

I know there are lots of pilots with better qualifications than me who did not get called...so I feel VERY FORTUNATE to get an interview and will do my very best to represent AirTran to the best of my ability.

I have been applying to AirTran for over a year, and from what I gathered by talking to the other guys in my interview group, many of them were also in DFW in January--It's up to you to make the most out of the opportunities you get.

I have heard stories of pilots getting jobs more based on their persistance: sending resumes weekly, attending EVERY AirInc job fair, having friends walk their resumes in...It shows that you really want the job...

You have to decide how much time/energy/$$$ you're willing to put in, and if the investment will yield any returns.
