I interviewed recently at SkyWest, and feel that I did very well. I was honestly surprised when they subsequently turned me down.

I'm over fifty, and one of the interviewers made a remark during a one-on-one that set me thinking - he commented that they were "required" to interview me, otherwise they could be found guilty of age discrimination under federal law.

My question is this: Is there anyone on this board who was initially hired by SkyWest when they were over fifty? Or, do you personally know anyone who was hired there when they were over fifty (and if so, how old were they?)

Inquiring minds want to know....

In my new hire class at SkyWest, we had 4 of us over 44 with the oldest 57! Plenty of grey hair to go with the young guys in the cockpit!

Skeptical

I've seen quite a few guys over or around 50 that have been hired here in the 13 plus years I've been at SKYW.

AF

Just curious, but your profile says you are a CRJ FO in training. Did you get on with someone else instead of Skywest?

One of my favorite FO's got hired here at 54 years.

Got offers from Pinnacle and American Eagle - went with Pinnacle.

Sorry to hear about how you feel. Let me first tell you that there is discrimination in the workforce and the hiring process. I have met many pilots who have similar experiences but were never called for an interview due to a certain race or age.

There has been a case study that was released couple of weeks ago in california regarding race and discrimination in the workplace. A group of 10 resumes were sent to the same employers in aviation. 8 names were of minorities such as Abdul Hakim, Jose Cantobar, Tyrel Washington, Jung Lee,...etc. 2 out of 10 names were of people of European ethnicity. They found that "American" names were 5 times more likely to be called for an interview as the ethnic names with identical resumes. All the resumes were sent on the exact date and with identical hours. This and further tests revealed that there is discrimination based on ethnicity.

As far as skywest goes, i am not sure of your situation or familiar with skywest so it will be premature to speculate. The thing i found unique with skywest by hanging around the airport is that there seems to be a very diverse group of people there. I used to work at United as management and I brought many issues up with upper management regarding race. When one looks around the ramp, there are mostly minorities that work there but when one observes the flight crew, it is mostly one group of people. This trend is followed in most airports and in most airlines. It doesnt necessarily mean that there is discrimination in the hiring practise; instead, it means that companies need specific training plans and programs to contribute to certain communties. But every case is unique and hard to prove. If the person that interviewed you made that comment, then that was unprofessional.

I know that i went on a tangent between age and race but both are hard to prove and both exist in todays world.

Oh yeah, Heavy set is right. Remember that when one door closes, another door opens up. Keep your head up and i am sure that you can teach many of the younger pilots a thing or two.

I can assure you that we do not discriminate with regard to age, sex, race or sexual orientation. As a Flight Attendant recruiter, I have personally hired grandmother's and grand fathers. Some of our BEST Flight Attendants that receive the most complimentary letters are in their 60's.

"Welcome aboard ladies and gentlemen, this is Captain Abdul; assisting me on the filght deck are First Officer Tyrel and Engineer Jose. Your cabin purser is Flight Attendant Jung. Hope you enjoy your flight!"

Blah blah blah blah blah...if a black person, a female, or a some guy from Portugal wants to come down here and do some flying in the feeders, they aint going to be discriminated against. Where are their resumes? I'll hand walk them fuggers in to the chief tomorrow.

You want the truth...you can't handle the truth.
