Hello everyone, I'm new to the board. I have a question about physical/medical requirements for applying for a pilot slot in the USAF. When I was younger(age 8-14), I was prescribed an inhaler for what the doctor called exercise induced asthma. I competed very competetively in soccer throughout high school and college and never had any problems and never had to use the inhaler. I spoke to the officer accessions recruiter here and he told me I need to see a doctor and have him say I don't have asthma. However, I recently saw an OTS publication-don't remember if was a student journal or offical USAF-that required no history of asthma. I searched the military forum and didn't find anything on the subject. Does anyone know anything about this? Thanks in advance for replies.

All I can say, from my experience, the less you tell Medical at the beginning, the better off you are. After you get your wings, you can let all the cats out of the bag. That's just from MY perspective.

The reruiter's job is to provide qualified applicants for the board. Your job is to make certain your application is as accurate and acceptable as possible. Your medical history may or may not be included on the application (I don't know), but it will come up at some point.

If you live near a Guard, Reserve, or Active Duty Air Force base try calling the Flight Surgeons office on base. Explain who you are (OTS & UPT applicant) and ask to speak with a Flight Surgeon. He'll know the medical ramifications of your situation.

As to the letter from a doctor saying you don't have asthma, try to find a doctor who is also a Guard or Reserve Flight Surgeon. His letter will carry more weight if there's any question.

I wish you success!

Click on pulmonary, then Asthma. This will be the information the doctor needs from you to submit a waiver.

It may or may not get approved. Thats up to the SG.
