Advice on applying fighters AND heavies

I've been told to avoid trying both tracks because each side will view it negatively. The fighter guys will think you don't really want fighters that bad and the heavy guys will think you're using them as your back-up plan. I just want to serve my country as a pilot in the ANG or AFRES.

Anyone ever get burned by this or have any tips to skirt the issue?
