Just curious if anybody on the forum has ever been involved in a aviation related accident. I am just curious how it changed you and if any legal hoops were presented to jump through. I understand that this may be a slight faux pas, but my curiosity got the best of me.

The most I can speak of is that I got a buffet on base to final during my Private training. Learned a lot from that one.

The answer to your question is that the outcome of an incident or accident really depends on the circumstances...very unique to each individual event.

I put an airplane on the ground this summer following an engine failure in a canyon with no ill after effects...the only thing I ever got back was "good job."

I had interviews and dealings with numerous state, local, and federal authorities, the NTSB, FAA, agency personnel, numerous law enforcement, etc. I spend a few days with an accident investigation team.

The FAA didn't bother to come to the site to see the aircraft, others just said send pictures.

Each outcome, and each event, however, is very, very different.

I put a B model Ag Cat down in a field a few years ago after blowing a jug off the engine. Wasnt a big deal at all really. Honestly, I dealt with more $hit from the EPA and dept. of Ag for dumping my load than I did from anyone else. It was kinda like "oh, we're glad you're alright... now, about that 200 gallons of tank mix you dumped...". Like Avbug said, it all depends on the accident, the circumstances, and the person.
