ABR Flying Service

Aberdeen, SD 605-225-1384, Mark Caven owner with his dad, Jim. Great place, great business. They are a small charter service in SD. Good place to work. aptobright

I talked with Mark on the phone for 20 minutes, but everything he said was so vague and unspecific. He couldn't tell me how much I'd get paid, what plane I'd fly, what kind of commitment he needed from me, etc.

At least tell me what kind of $ I can expect before I move to SD.

If you are thinking of a move to SD, look at Capital City Air Carrier in Pierre. They have Senecas and Navajos doing bank and UPS runs. Most were Minneapolis based though.

Also, Business Aviation in FSD would be a good choice too. Very good pay for flying 310 and 402's also they have Metros. From what I heard they are one of the only 135 carriers in that part of the country with Jumpseat agreements on Northwest Airlines if that is important to you.

I flew cargo in SD a couple years back and both the above companies are decent places to work, and they actually both do a good job of maintaining their aircraft! Good luck!

I know little of Aberdeen Flying Service. They are a small charter operation. If you want to live in Aberdeen, BAC has a few routes based there.

I fly part time for Business Aviation Courier (BAC) and flew their full time for over 2 years. Great place to work, great DO and Chief pilot. No frills and no BS, they treat you like a human being and with respect. You get paid to sit, paid to fly and paid extra for every landing you do. They have apartments rented in all places you have scheduled layovers of more then a few hours, so no sleeping in the FBO. They also provide crew cars here and there at many out bases. Guaranteed pay, even if you cancel for weather.
BAC in my opinion raises the bar for light cargo 135 operations. They are a company run by cargo pilots. The DO and Chief pilot will fly the A/C in bad weather if they ask you to. That is how a leader should be.

They are very loyal to their pilots and always attempt to upgrade and promote from within. They are short Metro Pilots right now and are jumping through hoops to get piston guys up and on line versus hire outsiders.

I would recommend this company to anyone looking to build 800 + hours a year of multi time. Starting pay is around 30-35K I started with this company with 550 hours TT flying a Bonanza hauling checks. Made 36K my first year while I was going to college full time.

An example of BAC loyalty. When I reached 1200 TT I was promised that I would get on a Multi-route.

One week before my 1200, we lost 7 routes including one of my Bonanza routes. Instead of laying people off they promoted me and we made due. After a few months, started some new routes and all was well. They could have put my twin checkout on hold, etc, but they did what they said. And that means a lot in this industry.

They do expect you to have good instrument skills and have the ability to LEARN how to deal with ice and thunderstorms.

All of my friends that have gone through this company have been successful at every job they took after they left BAC. When I was there full time there was an incredible brotherhood amongst the pilots. Single pilot Day/Night IFR in light twin aircraft in the midwest will be the hardest flying you will every do. But almost everyone that flew here had a blast.

Caveat, if you have a greater then thou mantility, forget it. These guys are down to earth real humans.
