American Airlines brings back 'in-flight happy hour'

By Ben Mutzabaugh, USA TODAY

American Airlines says it will offer "happy hour" pricing next month to customers buying alcohol on flights departing during the 5-o'clock hour. The promotion is a return of one AA tried this past December.

Starting May 1, the carrier's "5@5" happy hour promotion will feature $5 alcoholic drinks on flights in the United States, Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean that depart between 5 p.m. and 5:59 p.m. (local times).

AA says the promotion will continue throughout the month and will be in effect for the duration of eligible flights. The $5 pricing amounts to a $2 discount on liquor drinks and a $1 discount on beer. The offer applies to all American, American Eagle and AmericanConnection flights. AA notes that non-alcoholic beverages will remain free.

AA adds that "special" Margaritaville margaritas will also be offered all month onboard the select flights for $5 -- a tip of the hat to the Cinco de Mayo holiday.

"The 5@5 Happy Hour is back by popular demand – our customers loved the offering last December so much that we decided to bring it back through May to add a little fun to the beginning of the summer travel season," Rob Friedman, American's Vice President – Marketing, says in a release. "Our customers' loyalty is a top priority, and the happy hour is a small token of our appreciation for choosing American."

$5 booze at 5 o'clock only?

Fly WN and we'll only charge you $5 24/7.

Gup

Yeah, well, AA isn't SWA.

AA isn't ANYTHING like SWA.

In fact, there's nothing except ground equipment and certain airplane types that bears ANY resemblance to SWA.

Nothing. Zip. Nada.

Now that you mention it there's...well, you get the point.
