A ROUGH Delta flight yesterday

Buddy flew a Delta 767 , fully loaded from Miami to North Carolina yesterday

At 23,000 ft, he heard a loud boom, and noticed a yaw to the left
Then he heard the captain say they lost left engine, a combustion stall.

The right engine was leaking fuel.

They went back to Miami to land, and the gear wouldn't go down. Finally it went down, and landed. He said he won't fly again for a long time,

Widebody service between Miami and NC? I thought you had to connect in Atlanta when flying anywhere on Delta. How did your friend know they were at 23,000ft, and that the right engine was leaking fuel?
 
A compressor stall, you mean? What is a combustion stall? I missed that day in ground school...
 
He should have no qualms about flying again. If that is what reallly happened then the flight crew performed as they have been trained to perform. He should feel extremely safe knowing that when tested, the flightcrew passed with (pardon the pun) flying colors.

Anymore aircraft are becoming so automated that the pilots are merely "managers"...that is, until something goes wrong. That's when we as pilots really earn our bread and butter...well, just bread in my case...in a few more years I should be able to afford butter! :D :D

Congrats to the crew of that Delta flight! And try to talk some sense into your buddy. If his car has a problem during his morning commute, does he get scared and stop driving for a while?

"Combustion stall?" Sounds horrible! I'd rather deal with a compressor stall. They're not nearly as frightening.

I'm just stating a story from my pal, who talked to my other pal. The "other pal" works for Miami Center ATC, so he knows the in's and out's of flying...

DAL (and other airlines) fly large aircraft on short routes in many cases...because they can fill 'em....irregardless of ETOPS certficiation. Especially in those ATL to Florida routes....lots of 767s and even 777s. It does give the guys a chance to take off and land more than once ever 8 hours too!
