Hey guys,

I recently graduated from one of the big three University's with an aviation background and am now wondering whether I should move to Alaska, continue these airline interviews, or join the military. I really wish I would have done AF ROTC, but I missed the boat. Now 5 days after graduating I am wondering if the AF has something for me in aviation-flying. I have heard that going to a recruiter is not the way to go, I would even like to fly ANG... But can someone point me to a person, or phone number where I can get more info on OTS or what is involved with college grads? PM if necessary. Thanks in advance.

In aviation timing is everything. Right out of college I went to a recruiter, took the test, applied and was in OTS less than 2 months after starting the process. I went on to fly the F-16 for 3000 hours before getting out to join a major. Two years later folks were waiting 18-24 months for a pilot slot if they were lucky enough to make the program.

Having said that, be careful. Let the recruiter know you're interested in the pilot program only and nothing else. If they can't put it in writing, it will not happen. If you know someone in an ANG unit, they are also a great option.

I wouldn't move to alaska without a job in hand. I lived up there for 3 years and parked my float plane next to several part 135 operators. One outfit required 5000 hours in type (DHC-2 on floats) flown in Alaska and had 8-10 pilots on staff. There were a few outfits you might be able to fly for, but most really value time flown in Alaska.

Good luck, reach for the brass ring. I applied for the air force after watching an old F-4 do a fly by at an airshow I had just skydived into. I turned to my girlfriend and told her I had to at least apply. So that someday when I was old and grey in my rocker I would have no regrets. Two years later I was flying the F-16 out of Luke AFB, AZ.

Malibu,

Don't discount the ANG. It's the best flying deal in the military. I am a "Guard Baby" (no prior active duty time) and love it. I fly all the same, and better, equipment without all the active duty BS. You'll have to wait longer to get to UPT but it's worth the wait.

Also, if you want to be an airline pilot it is the best furlough protection around. I'm proof of that!

If your interested in the ANG send me an email and I'll give you more info on how to apply or try www.ang.af.mil

The website will give you all the link to the units around the country.

Good luck and Merry Christmas.

CLAMBAKE

P.S. Not trying to slam my active duty brethren. We just have a different outlook in the Guard.

I HEAR THAT ONE!

Also, likewise with me Mailbu, email me if you have any questions. While I might not be able to help as much as pkober, I can let you know my experience from being prior enlisted to being selected. I have a long road ahead of me but like pkober said, you might have to wait a while but it is so worth it. Goodluck and merry chrismas to all!
