what is the range of a 747-200 at max gross weight? and the same for the -400?

what is the range of a 747-200 at max gross weight?

Well, that is like asking how long a string is...

It depends:

At max gross a 747-200 weighs in at 833,000 lbs.
At that weight ya can either maximize fuel OR pay-load.

At full fuel and light pay-load it will fly for 14 hours with standard tanks.

At Max 0 fuel weight (590) it can only carry 243k lbs of gas, perhaps 8,5 hours flying, reserves included.

In both cases ya were at max T/O weight.

I've heard several times that the 400 can (obviously) carry more but its only like 900-950K max gross so the amount more doesn't really justify the much higher cost...

An Atlas or Polar guy should chime in right about now....

i think the 400 has a mtgw of 875,000 lbs

Thats it?? Definitely not worth the price. I was told Connie's been getting 200's for a couple hundred thousand dollars each.

wonder if they are RVSM approved, etc?

lots of old airline equipment on the market right now for cheap

747's would almost always have to be RVSM'ed unless they were only used for USA domestic flying.... Europe and the rest of the world has enforced RVSM since the 60's.
