I'm currently a CRJ captain and I'm thinking about biting the bullet and buying my 737 type (hopefully my kids will get a scholarship for college because odds are there will be no money for them.) My question is: If I don't get on with SWA, will the 737 type hurt me when I apply with other airlines.

I've never heard of a type rating actually "hurting" someone's chances of getting on with another airline. I don't think there is any valid logic to support that.

It probably depends on the carrier, but I doubt too many would look down on you for having the 73 type. They may put 2 and 2 together however so I wouldn't BS them if they asked why you had the type and no time with it. Just because you are trying to become competitive for SW, it can always be your backup plan compared to whoever else you might interview with. Sometimes a good backup plan turns into the best primary plan.

I had the 73 type and was in the pool at SW when I interviewed at FedEx and it never came up. They had a copy of my license and my resume, but they never asked me anything about it. I dind't bring it up, but I was prepared to discuss it if they did.

Your mileage may vary.

Good luck.

I have a B737 type, and recently interviewed at another regional. I can tell you that I was asked several questions such as - Why I have a 737 type with no time in type? Are you in the pool at SW?, Would I leave to go to SW?

I answered all of them truthfully.

I did not get the job even though I was the highest time guy of the interview group that day, had a college degree, had previous 121 PIC experience, and did extremely well in the sim eval.

I think that the B737 type hurt me.

Might not at a place like Fedex where they do not anticipate you leaving for "greener pastures."

You flew the J32, your aviation life will be blessed. You have my respect.

My two cents...

Was told by my present employer... get a 737 type.. look for another job. Seems like the petty minded people who want to own you will not like a 37 type. After MUCH soul searching I'm going to go for it.... my faith and belief in being HONEST and doing the right thing should carry me through. I wont lie... nor will I compromise my beliefs... but .. at the same time I'm ready to pay the price. YES I want SWA and I will admit that but i am also hoping that I can convince people hat the type also proves that i am trainable and that i am a good investment.... that I am willing to go for my goals .....leave the rest up to the lord.

What the future holds for me... "que sera sera'...... who f'ing knows

I know World Airways is anti 73 type. I had mine when I got hired there in '95 but at that point it wasn't much of an issue.

Within the next two years several of us quit World and went to SWA. I was very disapointed in the way they handled resignations. I thought it was pretty unprofessional.

By the time my third friend left World they were downright hostile about resignations.

I enjoyed the time I spent flying for them, but after that I haven't given them a second thought. More than that, there are several World guys that will NEVER work at SWA. We publish the interview lists for a reason. Good guys get the nod, and bad ones get blackballed.

Remember the old saying about burning bridges. Works both ways. All of us at SWA know a ton of well deserved guys that would be great here. There's really no room for guys that are not SW material.

I was hired at two corporate/charter operations, one of the large four fractionals, and my current job (airline, not SWA) with a 737 type. Didn't hurt at all.

Well in todays times there isnt alot of activity when it comes to landing a new job. You can be honest and always say that since there wasnt many airlines hiring at the time, you decided to try to improve on your qualifications and get the 737 type to be competative for a Southwest interview since they were hiring. They cant look at that in a bad light. If they do they probably werent worth working for in the fist place.
