Without worry of price, what is the best headset for the 737? I understand they are pretty noisy so the 5X5 is not a great choice, true?

I have used the Sennheiser HMEC 45-KA for four years now and I am very happy with it. When you first try one of these it is not a night and day difference, but after a couple of weeks try your old headset and you will be sold on ANR headsets. I bought a battery (AA) charger w/ 8 batteries at Sam's for $20 and one pair of batteries lasts about 40-50 hours. Get a stereo model so you can turn down the volume on the inboard ear if you are flying with a soft talker. You still get the ANR at the same strength with the volume down.

I have heard good things about the Telex 850. It uses no batteries but does not cancel noise as well. The HMEC-25 is a quiet headset, but most pilots pull it of the inboard ear to hear the other pilot, and it eats batteries. At SWA, most of the crew bases have a two or three models to loan for tryouts.

Good info. I guess the 737 doesn't have a intercom. I didn't know that.

the telex 5x5 is good as is the Plantronics in ear which SWA provides you for free. you can kill noise in the open ear with a foam plug. this is pretty darn quite, perhaps a bit better than the ANR headsets, but you have to deal with the in-ear thing which bothers some, even with a custom mold.

I hate flying with guys with earplugs. They are always yelling in the cockpit because they can't hear themselves. I use the Telex 850. It is passive noise reduction and light weight. It is half of a Bose or other ANR headset and doesn't require batteries. It allows you to hear the radio and hold a normal conversation in the cockpit. The ear piece issued by SWA rubbed my ear and became painful after my first day of IOE.
