Looks like they are looking at a limited scope of aircraft. Also looks like they are doing a comparitive to 1944 rather than straight number counting.
 
I suppose that number doesnt inclued the suicides from distressed and/or furloughed airline workers??

No, but to be fair, it doesn't include the people that got suffocated to death by airline passengers just because they got a little excitable during the flight. Nor does it include the airline passengers that became suicidents because the airlines hosed them with a cancelled flight or missed connection.
