I just heard from a pilot at Tara Field that the plane had a known engine problem this am before this incident.

If only a DHC-6 could fly with one engine.

When one thinks of the loads carried by a 300 Hp single engine plane in AK and compares that to what is carried by a machine with two each 600 Hp engines, there may well be a grain of truth to that...

And it might even work when it's -20F outside!

A long time ago in another life, I actually had BOS Center (or was it BDL Approach?) ask me if we had both engines running in a DHC6-300. 60Kt headwind at 8000 ft en route from LEB to LGA. I'm not sure they were kidding.
