Sure.

However, in 1998 a house cost less than 100K. Now a decent house costs around 300K or more around a major city (near a hub). Gas was 99c a gallon, now its 3 and a half bucks a gallon. Insurance and property taxes were at less than 30% of what they are now.

Etc...etc....etc......

The Russkie is correct on this one. I can remember very vividly paying 79 cents a gallon for gas back in 98.

If gasoline had followed the inflation rate, it would likely only be somewhere in the neighborhood of $1.80, give or take.

That just depends on the starting date that you pick. Start in 1981 and the average price for regular unleaded gasoline would be about $3.30 today.

The price of gasoline, and other forms of energy, are part of the inflation rate. Some items increase faster than the overall rate while other items increase slower or even decrease. The inflation rate figure averages it all together.

And the only thing that has remained the same? The price of an airline ticket. Oh yeah and you can still get a hershey bar for 33 cents at Rainbow

Geez, those poor guys at TWA on the 767 back then. I make more than that on the Barbie Jet. Forgive my complete ignorance... this was several years before TWA's assets were acquired by AA. Did they have a concessionary contract at the time?
