Hey guys,

I'm just starting with two students who bought their own 172. They have the original 1964 manual, but it doesn't give me that much info on the different V speeds. I guess they were not as important back then! I think it has an O-300 which is a 140 hp engine. Any suggestions? Should I just not worry about it and use some generic #'s on the new checklists?

Luke,

Thats before POH's were standardized most of the speeds you are looking for are in there. Everything is just worded differently. Don't put anything generic in your checklists. Vx Vy and best glide should all be in there somewhere. Checklist numbers that aren't in the POH seem to bother examiners.

One thing to be careful of, if they have a dipper make sure it's for the right size tanks, I flew with a guy who had been using the wrong one for years.

Just one more thing to add...
It's got a 6-cylinder Continental O-300 which puts out 145 hp. It's an 80 octane engine. The big thing to watch out for is the carb heat requirements - it's a bit more suseptable to carb ice than the Lycoming powered versions.

Well Said Sled. Also, some of these aircraft's oil pressure gauge are slow to pick up oil pressure, so don't get too worried.

I owned a '65, which is almost the same ship.

Basic speeds:

VX - 67 mph
VY - 80 mph
Best Glide - 80 mph

Thanks for the help guys.

I think I'll buy one of the checklist that user997 posted. I see there is a choice of 172 basic for all the years and a checklist for the 1964 models D-H. If there isn't a letter identifier for the plane should I buy the basic one or the other one? Did I just confuse anyone else besides myself? :)

Does it have electric flaps? Electric flaps = '65 (F-Model) Manual flaps = '64 (or earlier) E model

manual flaps

Try this; it's fun. Short field Take-Off: Accelerate to about 45-50 with flaps up, but with your hand on the flap handle. Rotate to climb attitude as you pull about 10-15 degrees manually on the flap handle. It pops off like a home-sick angel!
