Without going through Cessna, is there any way I can figure out what the color scheme was to a 1963 Cessna 172, when it was new, if I know the serial number, etc.? Thanks.
The possibility of being able to get the 'scheme' is unlikely. You would be better off doing a search on the internet and finding an old picture.
If the original owner was worth his salt, he would have written the paint numbers down in the log book somewhere.
That is a little trick that I became aware of working on the larger corperate jets for when you need to do some touch-up painting, beats the heck out of rounding a paint chart and trying to match up the colors.
Inside the airplane under the carpet usually is a metal tag with trim codes on it. The parts manual has the colors and interior trim for that year in it, and with a photo, as Gatorman posted, you can figure out the color scheme.
