To act as an Second In Command under part 135 I understand that a pilot needs to pass a written and or oral test and a flight competency check as required by 135.293 every 12 months.

My first question: I heard a rumor that a 135.293 SIC checkride does not require any specific type and # of approaches or even holding procedures. Is this true?

My next question has to do with 135.245(a) which says: (a) no certificate holder may use any person, nor may any person serve, as second in command of an aircraft unless that person holds at least a commercial pilot certificate with appropriate category and class ratings and an instrument rating. For flight under IFR, that person must meet the recent instrument experience requirements of part 61 of this chapter.

The only recent instrument requirements of part 61 I can find are 61.57 (c) (1) which is for a PIC.

(c) Instrument experience. Except as provided in paragraph (e) of
this section, no person may act as pilot in command under IFR or in
weather conditions less than the minimums prescribed for VFR, unless
within the preceding 6 calendar months, that person has:
(1) For the purpose of obtaining instrument experience in an
aircraft (other than a glider), performed and logged under actual or
simulated instrument conditions, either in flight in the appropriate
category of aircraft for the instrument privileges sought or in a flight
simulator or flight training device that is representative of the
aircraft category for the instrument privileges sought--
(i) At least six instrument approaches;
(ii) Holding procedures; and
(iii) Intercepting and tracking courses through the use of
navigation systems.

So is 135.245(a) indicating that a SIC must complete six instrument approaches, holding procedures, etc.?
If yes, then im confused with why a pilot would not have to demonstrate holding procedures on a 135.293 SIC checkride but that SIC would need to fly a holding procedure to comply with 135.245(a) / 61.57 (c) (1).

Can someone please clear this up for me?

Thanks for everyone's help!

The SIC 135.293 check requires at least 1 Normal ILS (Engine out ILS may be substituted in multiengine airplanes) and 1 Nonprecision approach. Holding procedures are not required.

You are correct in the SIC IFR currency. Doesn't make sense in light of the SIC 135.293 requirements, but yes you must maintain 61 PIC IFR currency as a 135 SIC.
