I see lots of posts by folks getting 135.243 IFR mins and getting hired at 1200 hours. After 18 months of instructing, I'm just about to 1200 TT, but my cross country is nowhere near the 500 hr requirement. In fact, it's closer to 200. Yes, that includes any trips to other airports. How does this compare to others at this point? Am I missing something? Is this common?

At this rate, I'll have to have 3000 hours before I have the 135 cross country mins!

Are you counting cross country greater than 50 miles? You can apply all "airport to airport" time as cross country time for the 135 mins... not sure on the actual rule but you can.

Make sure that on every flight with every student you have them land and a neighboring airport. Tell them its good practice, because it is. Thats how I did it.

Yep, I'm counting any time 'airport to airport.'

Guess I'm just going to have to take my students to the next airport over when we practice those landings...

Yep yep. We had an airport barely 10 miles from our flight school. Being the caring instructor that I was and only concerned about the advancement of my career, I made sure that every lesson incorporated a quick touch and go at this nearby airport. Infact, I'd just do it myself while they were under the hood and I was claiming to be settign them up for unusual attitudes. Presto, instant X-C time. I'm not some slimy lawyer, but the FAR/AIM defines X-C as airport to airport and only specifies a distance when meeting the requirements for a certificate or rating. I know nothing about 121 though.

Here in sunny Florida there is an airport every 10 miles up and down the east coast. Probably every other flight we stop at one of the uncontrolled fields around the area for a touch n go or two.

To answer your ? I am at 1100 and 450 XC (point to point)

it can be tough I realized that I was at 1200TT and only 300XC point to point so as the rest of the guys said I am currently making each student go to the neighboring airports for practice...
