Where is the final approach segment on an ILS? Can it be considered established on the localizer but outside the FAF or do you have to have the GS too?

121 Carriers have to go missed if wx goes below minimums outside the FAF or the Final approach segment on precission/ nonprecission?

If wx below mins, 121 cannot shoot approach, correct?

Anyone have a reference as to where I could read up on that? I can't find it in the regs.

Thanks!

I always thought the Final Approach Segment was FAF - MAP, so on an ILS that would be GS intercept...does it differ for 121 ops?

I have worked a 2 121 carriers, and both defined the final approach segment differently!!

Currently, my company goes with the definition in the front of the Jepps, final approach segment begins at the LOWER of published GSIA or the altitude at which you intercept the GS.

My current company defines the final approach segment the same as ATLDC9.

If the wx mins go below outside the FAF, then technically your not on the final approach segment and therefore don't have to go "missed". You can't begin the approach but you can simply request to hold somewhere and wait until the wx mins are there for you to operate. At a busy airport, your mins may be 2400 rvr, next operator can fly CAT II 1200 rvr, next 700 rvr CAT III, etc, depending on ground equipment, airline ops specs, High mins may apply to individual pilots, etc...

Once inside the FAF if your wx is updated, it's ok to continue and you as the pilot now become the judge of the "inflight" visibility. I think the reg you are looking for is 121.651.

Nonprecision FAF = Maltese Cross on profile view
Precsion FAF = top of arrow on profile view

WX goes below landing minimums (vis) outside these points, you cannot continue the approach.

That pic was taken in ND. Those are actually Gads and Widgeon. Pheasants are the best though! I spend my fall/winters in ND, SD andIA. Maybe MT this year, regards
