I own a a/c, current annual expired 100 hr. Can I give instruction for hire in the a/c because I'm not technically renting the a/c but charging for the instruction? My understanding is the instruction for hire does not require a 100 hr but if I rented the aircraft without me it would require a 100 hr....

Thanks!

I can't quote the regs at this time - having taken a "sleeping pill". However, your insurance will whince at the thought of you making ANY money without the proper coverage.

Without flight instruction or commercial insurance on your plane, you will be setting yourself up for other issues should you smack a runway light while riding right seat in the plane.

You could be setting yourself up for failure even if you give FREE instruction in your own plane!!!!!!!

Check out your policy, it probably states that ONLY the named pilots can manipulate the controls, etc....

Call YOUR insurance company and find out the sticky little details first.

More on the regs tomorrow - after a good nights sleep..........

In your situation, you are providing the Aircraft, therefore a 100hr IS required. The Reg. states that a 100hr is required if giving flight instruction for hire in an aircraft you provide. If you were just a freelance instructor, and your student was renting a plane from an FBO, technically if you dont work for the FBO, no 100hr is required because your not providing the A/C, and the FBO is not providing instruction. Just renting an A/C does NOT require a 100hr as long as no persons or property is being carried for hire, and they are not providing instruction in it.

It's exactly the opposite. If you're just renting the airplane (no instruction) it doesn't need the 100 hour. If you're provide an airplane used for instruction, it does.

91.409(b) - that the person (flight instructor) provides - yes, you need 100 hour.

Also as to the other post - Cherokee insurance for personal use only $1150/yr, Cherokee insurance for use in flight instructing $5,600/yr.

If you checked that little "personal use" box on your policy and it doesn't say anything else - when you flight instruct, you are basically flying without a policy!

I stopped instructing in my own plane many years ago since I didn't have enough freelance business to pay all my insurance and inspections.

By the way, if the "student" provides the airplane, there is no need for a 100-hour or an insurance policy but it would be a VERY good idea to get your own personal liability policy to cover that.
