    How is this even possible?

Is that an Airbus? I thought their software prevented human error, like the HAL9000. Nose gear retracts on the ground: http://youtu.be/XT7BC0HyNV0

    USAF Academy or ROTC

You're pretty close about the USAF, but I can pick a couple of nits: Ahhh no. That was pretty much true in the Cold War fighter force that I was in. I don't think it was ever true for the trash haulers. Today's mini-force is tiny compared to what it was 20+ years ago. And our current...

    USAF Academy or ROTC

It's factually incorrect to assert that a ROTC or OTS graduate has an equal chance of getting a UPT slot than an AFA graduate. While not every newly commissioned officer who wants a pilot training slot gets one, the odds greatly favor the AFA graduates. Once you get to UPT then getting a...

    Horrible News Everyone

If you have any non-routine 'issues', you owe it to yourself to contact Dr Bruce Chien in Peoria. Besides being a great AME and pilot, he knows the FAA internal processes better than anybody, and can often issue same-day SI's for things that usually take months. I know, because he did it for...

Bomber pilot helped land airliner after captain fell ill

The way I read the accounts it sounded like the PA asked for 'non-rev' pilots, and the Bone guy hit his call button when nobody responded. The FO was probably hoping for another airline pilot and figured the Bone guy was good enough. What has happened in the past when one airline crewmember...

    Third-Class Medical with Sleep Apnea?

My AME told me the CPAP usage requirement was: I brought the CPAP printouts and letter from my family doctor. After the AME made a phone call to the FAA he was able to issue a certificate with an SI that day. The SI (but not the whole physical) has to be renewed every year.

FAA medical will require sleep study for some, others to follow

I have an SI for OSA. To be diagnosed I had to spend the night wired up like a muppet while they watched me on TV. Once diagnosed I had to spend another night to determine my CPAP calibration. Each study costs about $2K. OSA is a real money-maker for the people in that business. I was...

Who does military charter in 747's?

A FedEx 747 flew me and a few hundred of my friends from CONUS to Japan back in the late 80s (IIRC). Configured for all economy passengers, the only time I've been in the upper cabin. Edited to add: Possibly a former Flying Tiger airplane.

    TWA Flt 800

No, these were center fuel tank explosions on two Boeings. Just like TWA 800, the explosions cut the fuselages in two. Now you can belive: a) Our government fired a Patriot class missile at TWA 800, a missile that was barely visible and left no fragmentation or blast damage, but somehow sliced...

    TWA Flt 800

It was a fuel tank explosion, as has happened a number of times on various Boeings.
